Blackcurrant extract increases fat oxidation during moderate-intensity exercise

Study
Sports scientists at the University of Chichester gave female students a placebo every day for a week. On another occasion, the subjects were given 2 capsules of black currant extract for a week. The researchers used CurraNZ. The producer of this extract, Health Currancy, paid for the study.
Each capsule contained 300 milligrams of extract. It contained 100 milligrams of anthocyanins such as delphinidin-3-rutinoside, delphinidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-rutinoside and cyanidin-3-glucoside.
After the supplementation period, the researchers got their subjects to walk at a brisk pace on a treadmill for half an hour. They determined how much fat and glucose the women burned.
Results
Blackcurrant extract supplementation increased the oxidation of fat, but at the same time decreased the oxidation of carbohydrates.
The effect of the supplement on fat oxidation was greater as the women had more body fat. The more fat the women had on their arms, legs or trunk, according to scans, the more supplementation boosted fat oxidation.
Other studies
According to previously published (and sponsored) research, untrained subjects taking supplements containing blackcurrant extract may burn a little more fat while cycling. In this study, the subjects also cover a greater distance through supplementation.
The same effect has been shown in studies in which athletes acted as test subjects and in studies in which test subjects moved explosively several times in succession.
Mechanism
According to some researchers, an extract of black currant stimulates mechanisms that make muscles burn fat more easily, according to others, black currant increases the amount of oxygen that the body can absorb.
In addition, there are studies that suggest that the mechanism has more to do with neurological processes. According to those studies, blackcurrant extract increases the activity of dopamine in the brain.
