Broadalbin man accused of illegally buying steroids from Turkey
BROADALBIN ? A 26-year-old man is accused of illegally buying steroids from Turkey and shipping them to the Capital Region, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.
Deputies, Homeland Security agents, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents arrested Kurt T. Smith at 4:12 p.m. Monday inside his Broadalbin home, the sheriff's office said.
Police found several types of steroids ? all of which are controlled substances which are illegal without a prescription ? inside the home, the sheriff's office said. Smith is charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Homeland Security investigators had discovered steroids were being shipped from the eastern European country to Broadalbin and contacted the local sheriff's office, sparking the joint probe, deputies said.
"Not only is it a crime to purchase and possess steroids without a legitimate prescription, there is a great threat to the users of such or any controlled substances sold online and overseas in not knowing the origin or composition of the items being possessed and used," Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino said.
