Buying a new TV, need some help

I graduated from college last year and started work a couple months ago so i am living in an apartment and have saved enough money to buy a new TV since the one i have now is a shitbox from 1998.

I don't want to pay more than $600 bucks. I am willing to push it a little to about $650 but that's it. I have been looking online at Wal-mart, Target and Bestbuy to see what flat screen HDTVs are the best and some are $499-599 (on sale of course). I am looking for anything that is 36" to 42". I am not very experienced when it comes to the "tech" stuff such as plasma/LCD and 60/120/240 hz rate and so forth but if you guys have suggestions please tell.

I just want a good TV that has great picture quality. I do not care about surround sound or any of the features that are unnecessary that most people need for movies. Thanks.
 
I would go with a 36" top of the line, rather than a 42" crap box....
 
So many good deals right now. I like Samsung. Good name so you know you are getting a quality TV. I personally like Plasma. You can also try a search on this. We just had a discussion regarding this same issue.
 
try doing some web search and use the keyword T.V. I suggest that you buy the brand sony or a sharp because of their good quality.Those brands are tried and already tested to last for more than 15 years.I have a T.V at home and it's was made in Dubai.I've been already using that T.V for 16 years and is still functional.

What's he going to get a used 32", I think he wants a mid-range larger tv which with $600 is easy these days....a 36-42" Samsung, Panasonic or LG is what I would be looking for....

If you're not going to hang it on a wall, there's virtually no reason to buy a Plasma/LCD, IMO. You can get a much larger DLP set for the same money.

Start on cnet and do some research. If you want the best bang for the buck go with the vizio from costco. Its decent, but not a samsung. Im a huge samsung fan. I have also owned sony, lg, and off brands. Keep in mind the bargain tvs even by samsung that you find for blow out prices at best buy and whomever else sells tvs today are usually special to the sales and only available at that time. Ask yourself how close you plan to sit, if the speakers on the TV will be the only source of sound, what you plan to hook up to the TV, where its going to be placed(on the wall, stand, with the sliding glass door peering in messing with the lighting). too many variables. you have the price, answer a few of those questions and we can help you select. If you have no intention of getting a blu ray then 1080p is not necessary.

Okay, i went to Target, Bestbuy and Wal-mart today and took some pictures of the price tag and its features of the ones i looked at and liked. Let me know which one you think is the best deal. I will post pics.
 
That Panasonic at Target has 1million to one dyn. contrast and is 42", but only 2 HDMI ports....looks like a real bargain....

I had 2 Vizio's and returned them because the blacks were washed out....

Mind explaining this?

I am concerned about plasma though. I spoke with the salesmen and they all gave pros/cons for plasma ans LCD and by just looking at the picture of the TVs myself, it is clear that the LCD looks a lot better than plasma. Also, the salesmen said the LCD's last longer than plasma.

I watch a lot of dark movies, the Dyn. CR generally the higherit is the better the blacks will look, my biggest pet peeve for tv's is when I'm watching something and the blacks are glowing....

In my opinion our Plasma has a much better picture, I also like it because I move around for a more comfortable spot all the time sometimes watching from the side when writing at the kitchen table with our LCD I couldn't do that....

LCD is the way to go, not sure if they're offering it anymore but Best Buy had a 36 month no interest financing deal, check into that.

No, i had already decided on the Plasma TV and am getting it tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and opinion. I'll let you know how it is when i set it up next week.
