For the past few months I have noticed a guy at my gym who almost always sips on a Red Bull during his workout. I thought regular consumption of high caffeinated drinks like that was a no-no.

So whats the deal with caffeine? How much is too much and how regular is too bad?

People will argue the benefits of caffeine but I think all would agree that if you are taking it, you should be doing so without sugar added. Sugar Free redbull would be superior of course, with no sugar few calories and lots of caffeine.

I will leave dosage and general usage tips or warnings to others...

I read that it takes an hour for caffeine to kick in, so during your workout is kind of pointless.

I'm no expert but isn't the active ingredient in Red-Bull a stimulant other than caffeine? Those things have me doing back flips in about 10 minutes.

You should try the asian version of Red Bull.....comes in medicine bottles and is almost as viscous as syrup. Keeps you flying for hours. Truck drivers use it to keep awake for 12 hour drives. Wish I had some for workouts, would be incredibly effective. Would'nt like to know the sugar content tho......

They've got this drink over there which consists of a 350ml bottle of Thai rum, which contains amphetamine, two bottles of red bull (about 350ml), topped off with a small bottle of coke (200ml) and comes in a metal bucket full of crushed ice. Tates like absolute s***, but boy.....you are flying after that, and i mean flying....

Taurine doesn't really give you energy. It is mainly caffeine. And sugar in the regular ones.

As it turns out, Taurine is an amino acid that is used in our body for a number of activities. A couple of which are to act as a neural regulator, and to protect heart function. Substantial amounts of Taurine are also found in our eyes and stomach bile. There is no doubt that Taurine is beneficial, but I could not find any data that indicated it would give you an energy boost.

I thought the active ingrediant in red bull is guarana? which is simply a pseudo-caffeine, something similiar in a cup of coffee or tea. I'm going to tyr and burn some fat and all i do is cut my 6th / 7th meal (comes appr 5 mins before sleep) and add 2 cardio's a week and have a black coffee / tea 45 mins prior. I'm an ectomorph by nature though so fat just falls off me like a cat malting fur.

Not a darn thing is wrong with consuming caffein before your workout (unless youre a pregnant female). You can get dependant on it though. Redbull during a workout is useless unless youre gonna be working out for an extented period of time. Hes probably just drinking it for the suger rush that will hit him in 15 minutes or so.

According to nutritiondata.com there is 76.5mg of caffeine in an 8.3 fl oz can

During the World Series of Poker a couple weeks ago I had four Red Bull in an hour. I couldn't drink anything with calories in it because I'm on a contest diet, so I kept getting the sugar-free Red Bull.

Let me tell you, they should cut people off that stuff like alcohol. I was blinking rapidly and shaking like a mofo when moving my chips. It was insane.

Not to turn this completely into a red bull thread but I used to drink the stuff, back when I drank (alcohol). That was quite awhile ago and drinking a can now gives me a slight case of the shakes and I tend to tap my foot like a maniac. When you are used to it it's great (at least the taste and apparent energy boost) but I avoid it completely these days

Sorry for going off topic. I'll make this quick.

Did you place well at the WSOP?

On an empty stomach it takes much less. IMO ~15-20mins. So if he starts at the time of his warmup, it would kickin by the time he started his wo.

I think those benefits are suggested from low doses. Though i dont know about regular consumption. Most effective is caffeine from pills, though.

Yep, caffeine addition is a very real thing. Caffeing depleted the adreneal glands. But i guess thats from a daily consumption of high doses when it starts to become an issue.

It does take ~4hours for caffeine to work through your system. But if he is working out, i would imagine it would take a much shorter time. But i havent looked into details.

It would make for a more intense wo, whether bulking or cutting.

Right, but there are some impacts on mental enhancment.

The other stimulant in Redbull is Glucuronolactone

Just in the last 2 weeks, I have cut out the stimulant that I take before I workout. I notice a big difference. I have no trouble staying focused but I seem to lack the intensity I had before. I don't feel any weaker but those last few reps seem more difficult.

 you are right. But i dont drink that kind of 'make-your-spoon-stand-in-it' strong coffee.

cofeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!:spaz: :spaz: :spaz:
coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee beer...... then coffee ha ha!
Time to go work out.
the end

I use energized Xpand PreWO and it has caffeine and other stimulants...I'm not dependant on caffeine but I don't like to work out without it, it's awesome...workouts are SUPER intense. If I'm alone in the studio I get madd crunk, yelling at the weights, cursing god....all that shit.
