Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China, threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday.
In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.
"These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ... threatening the health of local people," it said.
Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.
"People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns," the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying.
A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 fen (three cents), much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity, the paper said.
A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms was illegal.
China's manufacturing industry has been repeatedly tarnished this year by a string of scandals involving shoddy or dangerous goods made for both domestic and foreign markets.
In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems.

Wait... I use hair bands to braid my beard in the morning. :barf:

Thats horrible, you know the only way to do it is to put it in your teeth and stretch it with one hand while holding your hair in the other. Thats fucking sick!

Mmmmmm, I loved my normal AIDS filled Hairbands, now I can get them with more AIDS! :roflmao:

I was under the impression that STDs can't live outside of an orfice for long, which makes the story of contracting STDs from sitting on a public toilet seat a myth.

I heard the same...and I would assume to make the hair bands they melt it down, and the heat would for sure kill most virus if not all of them...AIDS cannot live outside of the body very long...air kills it quickly.

Lets not forget that one of the ways everyone has been getting AIDS has been through the use of hypodermic needles and blood transfusions from an infected donor. Both cases where the virus has been outside the body for a long time but where there is still a lot of fluid. Crime scenes have to be dealt with carefully because the person who bled all over the floor may have had AIDS.

Those are the reasons AIDS can be so dangerous. I just don't know how much it is affected by heat.

I don't care if the diseases die off after a while......it's still gross.

I guess I was just addressing the general STD transferring through these hairbands when placed in the mouth. As far as the AIDS go, I'm not sure it's really classified solely as an STD, as it is also transferred via bloodborne (not sure if most STDs are this way as well as much as they are orfice/fluid to orfice). However, I still don't see how it can be transferred through the hairband when put in the mouth, although this does not mean that I am saying that the idea of it is not totally fucking disgusting.

It could spread if the person has a cut or sore (I think) in their mouth. It is possible (though unlikely) to spread AIDS through oral sex, so it is possible that it might spread this way with a hair band or something as well.

I can't wait to see the news on this.

I want to know how they collect the used condoms?

The man with the question!

Hep B is a persistent little virus though....................

That is just so YUCKY, and it doesn't make sense, as latex/rubber doesn't exactly have a long shelf life as it is...........................

I bet there is alot of nasty shit that gets recycled into stuff we often use.

Glad I don't use them.

^^^

Codoms that is. I use hair bands all the time

Well it is a police state, so they probably just follow everyone around on a bike with a BIG garbage can in tow. :D

1 Billion people, I didn't even think they knew how to use condoms....

Besides how do they get those tiny things on their hair? Must be smal braids....

You'd think they'd find a better use for them as rubber-bands for braces
