Dioscorea esculenta supplement boosts DHT in athletes
Yesterday, we bothered our esteemed readers with a Japanese animal study in which Dioscorea esculenta increased the concentration of the androgenic anabolic hormone DHT in muscles, thereby accelerating their growth. The authors of this animal study recently published a human study in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, in which Dioscorea esculenta appears to have similar effects.

In 15 male sprinters with an average age of 20, who also trained with weights a few times a week, the Japanese measured how much DHEA, DHT and testosterone was in their blood. The researchers also did this in a control group of young and healthy men, who did not exercise intensively. The comparison showed that the athletes had less steroid hormones in their blood than the men in the control group.

The researchers then divided the sprinters into 2 groups. They gave the sprinters in one group a placebo every day for 8 weeks. The subjects in the other group were given pills containing a total of 2 grams of Dioscorea esculenta every day.
Results
Supplementation with Dioscorea esculenta increased the levels of hormone in the athletes' blood.

Click on the table above for a larger version. It tells that the sprinters in the Dioscorea esculenta group built up a bit more muscle mass in their arms, and increased their deadlift 1RM significantly more than the sprinters in the placebo group did. Conclusion
"The results suggested that Dioscorea esculenta intake combined with resistance training has further effects on muscle hypertrophy and strength in athletes by restoring secretion of androgen hormones", the researchers summarize.
