[COLOR=#ff000]EXCLUSIVE:[/COLOR] Doug Jones Talks Frankenstein, B.P.R.D., Hellboy 3, Returning As The Silver Surfer, & Reveals Interest In Playing Another Superhero

The actor who played a few familiar faces in the comic book movie world talks about whether or not he will return to play Abe Sapien for Hellboy 3 or B.P.R.D., If another go at Silver Surfer is in his future, The delay behind Frankenstein with Guillermo Del Toro, and what other superhero he would like to play...

After hours of prosthetics, what was it like to see yourself become characters like Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films and Fauno in Pan's Labyrinth?

"It's what every little boy dreams of, even this 51 year old little boy. I can completely lose myself in these fantasy characters, and it's easier to watch myself in the finished movie without judging my own face so much, like I do in my human roles. It's also such an honor to wear designs from some of the best artists in the world, many of whom have been recognized by the Academy."

Speaking of prosthetics, you were fitted for a costume for a Frankenstein movie with Guillermo Del Toro. Then nothing further really happened, can you update the status of the film?

"Well, technically, I have yet to do an actual fitting on my real person. I did see the design of Frankenstein's Monster as an 18 inch maquette, and the make-up sculpt that was done on a life-size bust of me, all based on Bernie Wrightson's stunning Frankenstein illustrations. It was so hauntingly beautiful, my eyes got a little moist. As far as I know, del Toro's movie is still in development at Universal Pictures. He recently reported that he turned in a synopsis/treatment of the story to the studio in August, but doesn't have a finished script yet. He has often talked about this being his dream project, as it was the book and the movie that made him want to be the filmmaker he is today, so this is not a script he will rush just to finish. In the meantime, he's directing PACIFIC RIM, so I think we have a bit more waiting for FRANKENSTEIN."

As for the continued work of Abe, we know that due to the struggle to lift a Hellboy 3 off the ground that the studio may be interested in doing a B.P.R.D. movie. Is this something you have been approached to do, or have any interest in doing?

"I would absolutely be interested in Abe living on in a B.P.R.D. movie, even though I would sorely miss the relational dynamic of the HELLBOY team. No one has officially approached me on this yet, but I have heard casual talk when socializing with the powers that be. Abe Sapien is my favorite costumed character I've ever played, so this would be a no-brainer to say yes to.

Just going to ask, Hellboy 3, any chance of it happening?

"If only I was the one with that answer! I want this more than anyone, what with the set-up HELLBOY 2: The Golden Army gave us, but I've heard no more than you have on whether or not it's going to happen, or when."

A reboot for Fantastic Four is being planned over a third movie, but was there ever any chance of you returning for a third film, or even the rumored Silver Surfer spin-off?

"I signed on for my first movie in that franchise with a 3 picture deal that anticipated a Silver Surfer stand-alone film to come. My IMDb page has had a Silver Surfer movie on it, in development, for over 5 years now. So again, no one has officially approached me about actually filming, but this is a beautiful, stoic, heroic character I would love to delve into again!"

Now going off what this site is about, we have a lot of fans that would like to see you expand your list of comic book characters to play. Any you have interest in?

"I've already been blessed to play a couple of beloved comic book characters, so I don't want to be a hog ... however ... that being said, I would love to explore the possibility of playing a movie version of DEAD MAN. And even though this isn't a comic book thing, another small dream of mine is to play Jack Skellington on Broadway in a stage version of A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, if such a thing could ever happen. And I sincerely hope Tim Burton is reading this interview."

Frankenstein is a fantastic story, and has limitless potential that has never been tapped on film, despite the many attempts. Always enjoyed the Hellboy movies, and I hope #3 lives up to expectations. Tim Burton is the man!

Ron Perlman On HELLBOY 3 & Would Love to Work On GAME OF THRONES

Ron had high praise for George R.R. Martin, who was a staff writer on his CBS cult television series, Beauty and the Beast. He said George's scripts were high quality, making them very distinctive and unique from the others. He always look forward to performing what George had written. And now that George's HBO series, Game of Thrones is doing incredibly well many are wondering if Perlman would be a part of the cast at some point.

As for Hellboy the actor still isn't confident that it will ever be made, but won't give up hope just yet. He believes the third part of the trilogy is necessary since it would answer many of the questions that were left open from the first two films.

I really enjoyed the first two films in the franchise, and would like to see a third, but I won't cry if it never gets made. They were entertaining movies, but they were as deep and meaningful as a kiddie pool. As for questions that need to be answered with a third, I don't know any off the top of my head.

The only thing I can share with you is we have this demon who is a victim of this Oracle, which is not negotiable. He's been summoned to the Earth for the destruction of mankind, and that’s non-negotiable. This whole notion that his nature, is the demon of destruction — against the way he's been nurtured by his father, John Hurt's character, to be kind and in the service of mankind. Those things are going to be in play in the third one. Then of course you have Liz pregnant with twins at the end of the second film. So you don’t know what those two offspring are going to be? Are they going to be more human? Are they going to be more demon? Are they going to be a combination of the two? And how is that going to play out, in terms of Hellboy's destiny. Which I say again is non-negotiable. So that’s the backdrop for the third film. And everything will be resolved, all these open-ended questions will finally be resolved. I don’t know how, he didn’t give me those details. But that's the backdrop for it. - Actor Ron Perlman (io9.com)

Why don't they just get David Hyde Pierce to play Ab, since he does the voice for him anyway.

Agreed.
I was disappointed when he didn't do the voice in the second movie, though.

1. It's Guillermo's choice as director.
2. Because Pierce could never move like that.

HELLBOY 3 Is

HELLBOY 3 Is ?Very Unlikely? Says Guillermo del Toro

Recently with all the press for Pacific Rim, there's been talks about Hellboy 3 due to the fact the director and star of the Hellboy series and the director and a star in Pacific Rim. Recently Guillermo del Toro did an interview with Collider in which he discussed Hellboy 3. Here is the video of what he said about Hellboy 3 and below are quotes from the video in case you're on a phone and can't watch it.

?It?s very unlikely it?ll happen because you need things to converge so strongly. [Producer] Larry Gordon, Universal, the rights, Ron [Perlman?s] and mine?s availability, [comic creator] Mike [Mingola?s] blessing; we have pieces of that, but we don?t have all of that. You need so many things to confluence and then you need about $150 million.?

When asked if he would do a Hellboy 3 in the form of comics or a graphic novel in a way how Dredd 2 is, del Toro had this to say:

?I talked to Mike about making it a comic and Mike said very clearly, ?Hellboy the movies is yours, Hellboy the comics is mine; I don?t wanna confuse them.? He has been very clear about not bringing any mythology we did in the movies into the comics, like Kroenen being a mechanical clockwork zombie Nazi, or The Samaritan, which is not called ?The Samaritan? in the comics, or Big Baby, or Abe Sapien being like the character he is in the movies, which is different. In the comics he?s a hard-ass, Abe Sapien is really a tough guy, and in the movie he?s like this sensitive, mind reading fish man. So [Mike] is very careful, no love story between Liz and Hellboy, so on and so forth."

del Toro finally said that he does have a story ready and prepared for Hellboy 3 and that it would be a completely different direction than the first 2 installments:

?The way Hellboy 1 and Hellboy 2 are very different from each other, Hellboy 3 is different enough from the other two that it wouldn?t feel like the same universe in scale. He does become the beast of the apocalypse. But seeing the apocalypse is getting more and more?the bar is raised higher and higher every year; mass destruction is becoming the sport of the summer.?

It is important to note that Mike Mingola has said he would love to do a Hellboy 3, Ron Perlman has said he wants to do a Hellboy 3 and currently the film rights to Hellboy are with Universal but Legendary Studio's President has said he is interested in a third Hellboy and one of the places Legendary Studios is looking to move into is Universal. It's possible but it's all really a matter of how great Pacific Rim is. At the end of the day, I still do have hope that this movie will be made and I do think it will because everybody wants to do it, it's all really a matter of getting everybody in the same room and agreeing to make it.

Isn't it obvious Liz will get killed while pregnant and the kids will get born pre-mature, then adopted out to 2 different sets of parents. Hellboy will sink into the dark side of despair bent on vengeance, and his son will have to kill him, but only after some adventures with a girl he finds out later is his sister.
