Fat loss diet twice as effective if you supplement with caffeine
If you follow a slimming diet with few kilocalories, you can lose weight and fat faster by supplementing with dirt cheap caffeine. Anyone with a little knowledge about weight loss knows that. There are not that many studies that tell exactly how great the added value of caffeine during a weight loss diet is. Fortunately, nutritional scientists from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Iran published one.
Study
The researchers experimented with 60 women with a BMI of 25-40. The women followed a calorie shifting diet for 6 weeks. This meant that they ate only 1350 kilocalories per day for 11 days, and then were allowed to eat as much as they wanted for 3 days. Then they went on a diet again.
The 6 weeks that the weight loss diet took consisted of 3 such cycles. After that, the women received just enough calories for another 4 weeks to maintain their new weight. In total, the experiment lasted 10 weeks.
Half of the women took a caffeine supplement during the 10 weeks. The dose was 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. The researchers had dissolved the caffeine in water.
Results
The women who lost weight without caffeine lost 5.2 kilograms of body weight. The women who consumed caffeine lost a whopping 12.1 kilograms of body weight.
The women who lost weight without caffeine lost 4.3 kilos of body fat, the women who took caffeine lost 9.6 kilos of fat mass.
The loss of lean body mass in the caffeine group was 2.5 kilos. In the other group it was just under a kilo.
Mechanism
Resting calorie expenditure [RMR] decreased during the first 6 weeks of the experiment in both groups, but this decrease was not statistically significant. The tendency was that caffeine supplementation mitigated the decrease in calorie consumption.
Caffeine also reduced the women's sense of hunger. This effect was particularly evident in the last 4 weeks of the experiment.
Conclusion
"Calorie shifting diet effectively reduced body weight and fat mass after 6 weeks of treatment, the effect that remained for at least one month", write the researchers.
"But caffeine treatment during and after calorie shifting diet regimen produced constant weight loss profile even in follow-up period. Resting metabolic rate was not decreased during the calorie shifting diet and suggested that high rate of metabolism is a key factor in continuous weight loss by calorie shifting diet treatment."
