I am currently taking fish oil capsules with about three times per day as a source of omega 3 fatty acids. Each capsule contains
Fish Oil 1,000 mg,
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) 180 mg,
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) 120 mg per capsule.

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to add flax seed oil to the fish oil (w/ alpha linoleic, oleic acid, etc..)? I am currently trying to lose some fat and notice that the flax has a lot of calories. should I just stay with the fish oil, add the flax as well (how much?), or take flax oil instead?

Thanks

I personally am one of the ones here that thinks if you want to lose fat then "eat some fat" (about 20-25%) ; but in Essential Fatty Acid form and very little saturated fat and ZERO trans fats. I personally have had great success supplimenting with combinations of fish oils with omega3's and DHA/EPA and all the others found in flax and olive oil and boarage oil (includes ALA, GLA & Linoleic Acid and Oleic Acid). Also I take in seperate CLA. IT helped me dramatically in fat loss and prevented me from getting fatigued and seemed to get me out of fat loss plateaus as well as helping a lot to take the edge of hunger when running moderate calorie deficits. I think others here have had in depth discussion on this. Hopefully Jodi will ring in.

Ocean,

thanks for the advice, I have heard a lot of good things about supplementing with fat as well and that is why I was considering adding some flax to my current fish oil. Funny how fat can actually help with fat loss, but if it works, im adding it in...

Also, I noticed u are in Cape canaveral. I will be there this weekend to go on a disny cruise:D I actually am living in Gainesville, Fl right now, going to UF. Now that I mention the cruise, any suggestions on what to do with my diet and training while on the boat????

thanks

Ah that should be fun - I often go to the port and have a beer and sushi at the docks and watch the cruise ships head out as well as go offshore fishing myself.

The problem with cruises is that there is very little to do except drink and eat and gamble until you arrive at the islands. I would just go ahead and bite the bullet and jsut say "heck its a vacation - time to let go a bit." Try to not drink too often and when you do try to avoid the tropical fruit type drinks (which are very very plentiful and of course expensive - e.g. pina coladas, pain killers, mai-tai, rum and pinapple etc.) and just go with spirits and soda water or light beer. Also, do not drink too much at the same time you eat. I would bring some protein bars and apples along. For the dinners you will get lots of seafood options- shrimp, crab, oysters on the half shell and mahi mahi are excellent and lean - just don't dip in butter - use lemon and horseradish and a little of the cocktail sauce. Veggies are always OK. Avoid the desserts and breads like the plague cept once or twice on the whole trip. If you must eat some bread limit quantities and dip in olive oil for your EFA since it will slow the fast carb down. Also, they will be doing lots of buffets so try and limit the size of portions and if you eat too much - wait 2 hrs or so before drinking alcohol again. You probably want to bring your own water since you will dehydrate easy on the ships and the onboard water they distill from flash evaporators sucks and the bottled stuff they provide is very expensive.

Other advise - don't gamble right away - let the first round of tards run in and lose it all in the first few hours. After the tables get cleared its less hectic and you don't get caught up with the pace of things and blow it all before you get to the resorts. Just put what you want to call "entertainment" money in your pocket for gambeling and expect to lose every penny of it. Think of it only as the price of entertainment to watch a pro dealer take every penny as fast as they can...

Some of the bigger boats may have limited gyms onboard. I am unsure. You may be limited to doing only isometrics otherwise...
Have fun!

ocean,

The thought of forgetting the diet throughout the cruise has run through my mind quite a few times but I just gotta stay on track. I will definately keep all your good suggestions in mind but staying away from all those deserts is gonna be really hard. Oh well, I hope the boat at least has a decent gym...

What I do is just diet real well before the cruise and just pig out while i am on vacation, enjoy life!! I also will get up and run in the am on an empty stomach, that will help the metabolism stay fired up. Nothing fills the muscles up more than a piece of cheescake and a glass of red wine, hehe. Carb deplete for at least 5-6 days before the cruise, and drink shitloads of water. my water bill was 130 bucks from my last cruise, just kept grabbin bottles!!

Go with fish oil or both.

Just to update, I did get some flax oil and am now taking both. But man that flax has alot of calories/fat. Sometimes I doubt whether I should add som many calories?

Flax and fish oil are EFA's and you should definately continue taking them not sacrafice the health benefits due to the fat content. Remember its a healthy fat.

IMO...diet very strictly before your cruise but let go and have some fun on your trip....I don't mean binge but definately eat what you want...just try not to overeat. A frew week of strict dieting after the cruise is over and you'll have your conditionning back PLUS you will have thoroughly enjoyed your vacation:)

Ocean, FF, It seems like everyone feels I should relax and enjoy the cruise. While I keep telling my self that I will stay on my diet, I know that chances are I will end up indulging. I guess if that ends up being the case, I will just do what you guys said and try not to binge, stay away from bread, etc BUT drinking I can tell you right now will be unavoidable...but I will stay away from thsoe tropical drinks you mentioned ocean....I really dont like them anyways, they are too sweet....
