CC Sabathia is the reason I sometimes question weather baseball players should be considered athletes
I can understand this. Sometimes very specialized athletic events or positions require very little what we consider to be traditional "athleticism". Sabathia is probably a hall of fame pitcher, and he is morbidly obese. If he makes it, he will not be the only baseball player in the hall who had a serious problem with weight during their career. But the nature of Baseball as a sport is a bit different. Specialized talent goes a long way, especially with pitchers. Sabathia is a very tall man as well, and he does have outstanding durability despite his weight issues. Pitching is so technical, that sometimes outstanding ability trumps athleticism. He is an exceptionally talented athlete for his size. Some hitters have been on the fat side and managed great careers, especially with the advent of the DH rule. I pitched for many years, and was a decent athlete and in very good shape, but compared to C.C. Sabathia, my level of ability was practically nonexistent. I was essentially a thrower, not a pitcher. A pitcher can change speeds, has command of multiple pitches, and can throw to location with remarkable accuracy. All talents and gifts that have little to do with physical conditioning.
