Not tthat they needed help against the Jets.

By Chris Mortensen

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources.

NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.

Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.

The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Tuesday that no official decision has been made and that the club has not been notified.

The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.

Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone.

if I remeber correctly, wasn't it the Pats who got in trouble for something similiar last season during the playoffs? Or maybe it was Carolina? I feel like there was some other scandal during the playoffs with getting the opponents signals or something like that?

I always knew the Pats were a shady bunch.

They should have to forfeit their Super Bowl victory over the Rams.

You must be lying through your teeth if you think the Pats are the only team who "cheats" as everyone says it just to gain a competitive edge. They were just unfortunate that they got caught. I'm sure many other teams have and probably still do illegal things.

You are correct. They are the only retarded ones to get caught :p Multiple times.

On sports talk radio in Phoenix this morning, they were talking about the irony of the Pats getting caught for this against the Jets. The host of the show said that he wouldn't be suprised if it was Mangini (sp?) that used to hold the camera or review the tapes for Belichek back in the day.

What ever it is, clearly Romeo Crenell and Charlie Weiss have not used any of the tactics taught to them by Belichek.

Does anyone know why Belichick and Mangini hate each other? I mean, they used to coach together for christ sake.

I think Belichek is pissed at them for offering a fat contract to Branch. That lead to Branch testing the market and eventually going to seattle, instead of coming back to the Pats.

I really don't think the Patriots are doing anything that any other team doesn't do, but because they are the Patriots and are the best team in football, they'll be scrutinized.

Oh well, the sun will rise and the Patriots will continue to win.

I don't think it's that they hate eachother, just that Belichick finds Mangini "shady" and vice versa.

Belichick did to the Jets what Mangini did to the Patriots and then when the Branch story came to fruition, all hell broke loose.

Scratch that... They hate eachother.

New York Daily News - A former assistant under Bill Belichick, Eric Mangini arrived in New York last year with an insider's knowledge of the Patriots' sign-stealing surveillance tactics and he shared the secret with members of the Jets' organization, a person with knowledge of the matter informed the Daily News yesterday.

It wasn't until the fifth Mangini-Belichick showdown - last Sunday - that the Jets were able to catch the Patriots. Tipped off by Jets security, an NFL security official confiscated a video camera and tape from a Patriots employee at the Meadowlands, and the evidence is believed to be incriminating.

"(The Jets) knew they did it," the person with knowledge of the situation said in an e-mail to the Daily News. "They caught the guy a year ago, but couldn't do anything about it. When Eric came, he said that's what they used to do. Bill is going to be (ticked) at Eric. He kissed and told."

I think a good punishment would be to force the Pats to watch JD Drew try to hit a baseball out of the infield.

He's the one who brought it up.

I love Belichick as a coach but he's a little bit of a nut job, Parcells is not even as close with him as you would think.

I get the feeling Belichick felt that with mangini now with the Jets all of his secrets are now with the enemy....

I read that also, that tells you a lot.

I think they should put Brady in a Cage and let him watch a game In Oakland in the Black Hole. Then take him to casto street where he will be defiled by the gay Male population of San Fran

I absolutely love how it was the Patriots that got caught for cheating. They have won how many Super Bowls in the past several years, and still need to cheat to beat the Jets. Bill Belichick acting like he did nothing wrong. anyone see the press conference? hilarious. Dude got caught but won't admit it until the commish lays the smack down. He should be suspended if he knew it was happening, at the very least.

They beat the Jets fair and square. Yeah they cheated for "future" games with the Jets but Sunday's game its not like they reviewed the tape for signals during the middle of the game.

It sucks this happened :( but there are a bunch of naive people out there if they don't think every team in the NFL is trying to steal signals as well.

Well, as a Pats fan, i think it's hypocritical that they don't want "Undesirables" on the team while the head coach cheats.

Dale, I love you, but you can't honestly be comparing the Patriots philosophy of avoiding convicted felons to having a head coach that tries to get a competitive on field advantage.

My love for him died long ago, he means nothing to me now.

Final ruling

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
Here is the final ruling from the NFL:

Bill Belichick has been fined $500,000 by the NFL. That is the maximum amount under the NFL Constitution and By-Laws for violating league policy last Sunday on the use of equipment to videotape an opposing team???s offensive or defensive signals.

The Patriots have been fined $250,000 by the NFL.

The Patriots will give up their first-round pick in 2008 if they make the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs, they will surrender their second- and third-round picks.

Belichick will not be suspended.

???This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field,??? Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to the Patriots.
"I specifically considered whether to impose a suspension on Coach Belichick," Goodell also wrote. "I have determined not to do so, largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension."

BAM!!!! ouch!
