found out from a friend of mine his step father passed away unexpectedly from a stroke ..guy was a veteran but the family doesn't know much about veterans benefits and they're broke (I sent him a txt asking him something- he didn't come to me looking for help)
the gentleman that passed away was only 55 and di not have life insurance- not even a crappy policy to cover burial

anyway- come to find out the the VA pays a one time benefit of 300 dollars and you can have a marker in a national cemetery- unless you die in a VA hospital in which case its 800...

so I'm like hmm- that doesn't seem right- so I start looking around at state benefits- because I know there's some- well those have been cut too- its used to be 5 personnel for military honors and a 21 gun salute- now its 3 personnel and no 21 gun salute

so- my husband and I are are now asking various veterans organizations for help as well as the freemasons (who I think aren't technically allowed to get involved but there is an all veterans lodge near by my husbands lodge has reached out to)

you can't even have someone cremated for 300 bucks- thats nuts- they have had him cremated already and paid for an obit but would like a small memorial service. I'm so annoyed right now a vet can't even have a small memorial service you can't even imagine.

alternately - I'm glad my household has life insurnace

and don't get me started on the expense of flowers for a funeral- why in the hell are THEY a few hundred dollars for modest arrangements

Sorry to hear this.

My entire family are US Marines..and many of them had health issues..and the VA was a nightmare.

In my Grandfather's case, my mother simply pulled him off and did self pay to get the healthcare he needed. Sad but true. Just to get in for serious ailments can take months and months.

They really don't take care of our Veterans in this Country like they should imo. From VA to homelessness...I feel like they are often abandoned.

It is s racket. They charge more than 300$ for the cardboard box that you're required to purchase to be cremated. It's fucked up that flowers cost that much but they prey on guilt of the living and give the whole "you want the best for dad/mom, uncle whoever." It's heinous

ya
Im a vet and my husband is a vet- he has service connected injuries from OIF1 - we once had our family dr say that the va was another chance for a soldier to give his life for his country

I think we will be able to organize something through the freemason's though they will be researching the american legion as well... I have another vet- officer in vietnam thats very civil connected I need to contact to see what we can organize for this.

its just depressing to me

the frustrating thing about vets benefits is..unless you're connected with like...the DAV or something like it ..veterans benefits and services are almost hidden from view.

did he happen to keep his SGLI? thats like 100k or 150k for $1 a month

nope

his widow had his log in info so I checked that out last night :/

I think we'll be able to put together something that will work for them - just reaching out to everyone now and waiting on the ideas to come in

some states have additional veteran services, va sux took me 7 years to get my disability approved, I pretty much gave up on it

ya- our state cut back last year :/

Muscle Gelz Transdermals
IronMag Labs Prohormones
maybe if you say he was transgender they would find the money

I knew a incompetent fucktard who gave the wrong medication to TWO veterans and it killed them. She is still working for the VA.

this is the kind of care you get when you have a full-blown government run healthcare system. and this is the kind healthcare system Democrats want for the whole country????

I hope Trump can turn things around at the VA. our veterans deserve better. it's a disgrace what's being done at the VA to veterans.

..
repugs have historically de-funded the VA
I enlisted because of what a shit show it was and thought I'd eventually work in one- I'm glad I don't

theres also some scandal for when reform has been attempted that theres secret waiting lists etc...things like suicide prevention
a ranger blew his brains a yr ago who happened to be on one of those secret lists

good luck fixing it- the fact is the country doesn't give a fuck about soldiers/sailors, vets or the VA- only when it suits their sensibilities and they need an photo-op or wanna cry about the budget going to other places

I find it funny that police and firefighters are like superheroes but vets are nothing.

lol- don't even get me started on my police and firefighter envy my friend

emergency medicine is like the red headed step child in all of that

heres the real gods honest truth about the armed forces- and some people won't like it

there are some major dregs (spelling?) of society in the armed forces- ghetto, minority, mild criminal record, no brains at all.... and theres a relatively high percentage of dregs- what soldiers do have ..for the most part, is an unyielding ability to take orders even if its to their own detriment and endurance to take unbelievable amounts of shit

people often liken basic (for all branches) to being in prison and that's not even true- you have more rights in prison

from my point of view, is enlisted not officers, but enlisted were folks that had decent work ethic some had no opportunities in their town, some like myself average kid that wanted to learn a trade and get money for college. its all about what you put in and that determines what you'll get out of it

I like how emt people stabilize the patients but doctors get the credit for saving their lives.

I actually scrubbed in as a surgical assistant in the military ...standard procedure for all things medical..evrn stateside is that you can semi jump training/rank as long as someone over you in ability assumes responsibility..

Here's a funny story..by no means do I think me or my partner saved this guys life but...my partner was off down the hall dropping stuff in decon...i was just finishing up run form/ paperwork (it was still paper then!) And I'm going down the hall and glance into an ED room and there's an elderly man that had fallen out of bed and is literally hanging by a Foley (urinary catheter and bag) off the side of the bed and there's blood all over the floor...i yell my partners name and run in and try to like half stabilize the guys neck necsudr he has a head gash..hes clearly disorientated (whether it was primary or secondary to a severe infection..idk) ..and I'm like trying to take his body weight off his sick..lol
Anyway my partner runs in...sees what's going on and yells down to the nurses station (you pull the cord in the room and it makes a huge take in this particular hosp)

So a troop of nurses come in and a dr...my partner is pulling the Foley off the side of the bed so I can stop trying to help this old guy not rip his penis off(gotta give his urethra credit for not letting the balloon rip through..lolol)
Anyway..partner does that and grabs 4x4s for his head lac which is still bleeding like fuck and im just talking to the old guy..still holding cpine...onr nurse finally comes alive instead of watching and unpluugs the bp and now my partner and I are semi locked on the floor with this guy..thete are seriously like 5 wayyy more educated medical people that work in an emergency room watching what's going on...
I'm like..can I get a collar and a board at some point? Dr work he alive and runs out of the room...

He comes back with a good collar but the retard had only ever seen backboard in our decon room and literally brings us a board covered in blood from like two calls ago. So my partner yells..no..wrong room! Dr runs out with bad board..leaves it in the hall!!! comes back with a clean board....nd no straps...by this point my partner has talked a nurse into getting him take to put the 4x4 on..thats still bleeding through (head wound. It's possible the pt was on a blood thinner of almost any variety)
I am ready to murder the dr but my partner gets the collar on the older guy and we get him flat ob the floor...now the board was probably an abundance of caution but idc. I'm not getting sued...

Some staff to finally straps and the dr tried to hand me the board..uhh..my hands are full dude..i still have to hold his head until we get a head bed on him...he goes to ha d it to my partner...my partner is like...srs? Doc says...idk how to do this...my eyes narrow looking at him and I look at the nursing staff and they're all standing like sheep..paralyzed and right then it occurs to me that..for all the shit they ever treated us like they had absolutely no idea what to do with a or that wasn't already semi cleaned up..how to deal with weird conditions...or how to keep someone alive AND make sure their spine skull plus ABCs-stayed intact or were resuscitated unless it was like..on a gurney...prepackaged. the concept of having to deal with a PT dangling off of something was totally foreign to them...i can't imagine how most of them would handle a person alive..in a car wreck half hanging out a sunroof...or trying to rapidly remove someone safely from a collapsing structure..or hell..how to ride a stretcher while giving cpr...sprint across a lawn with an unconscious child...

Not saying there aren't some...but they really weren't bringing it home for old hanging by his sick guy...

Ps...his penis was fine..his spine was fine...he DID have a minor radial skull fracture but people actually get those and never know they have em..so...ya

Tons of typos and super long...

Ps...my life lesson for the evening is don't mix serotonin related drugs by accident unless you want to find out what mild serotonin syndrome feels like. I had a fun day

It's all good. I got the moral of the story.
