Toronto blogger embarrasses NASA climate experts : News : Tech & Gadgets : Sympatico / MSN

An amateur meteorologist from Toronto has embarrassed NASA scientists by catching an error in recent climate-change data. The resulting flap has led to accusations and finger-pointing over whether NASA's error was genuine.

CBC News

Thanks to blogger Stephen McIntyre's calculations, climatologists at NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Science (GISS) in New York now concede that 1934 was the hottest year in U.S. history, and not 1998 as it previously reported.
McIntyre first emailed NASA on Aug. 4 saying he'd discovered an error in its climate change data from 1999-onwards. He noticed inexplicable jumps in temperature around that time and, as it turns out, NASA's temperature readings have all been too high since then, to a maximum of 0.15 C.
NASA has since adjusted its numbers. They now show that 1998 is the U.S.'s second-hottest year and that five of the 10 warmest years on record in the U.S. date from before 1939. The worldwide numbers remain unchanged, with 1998 and 2005 tied as the hottest year on record.
McIntyre's findings did more than just embarrass NASA, though. They have triggered a storm of criticism from climate-change skeptics who accuse NASA of inflating the numbers to promote global hysteria over the environment and others accusing NASA of trying to keep the error quiet.
Meanwhile, climatologists at GISS say their critics are making a mountain out of a molehill and that the differences in the recalculated temperatures are so insignificant that they have no impact on the overall trend towards global warming.
They attributed the error to a new data collection system established in 2000 that used different methods than the previous one.

So you mean it's NOT getting hotter? It's actually getting COOLER???

Global cooling! Global cooling! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!:nail:

They're an agency with a huge budget and are constantly trying to prove their relevance in the post-Cold War era.

It's not about being a hippy, it's about creating a problem to solve to continue receiving paychecks.

I agree a 100%. NASA is a huge waste of our tax dollars right now. It has given us very little in the last 20 years. The first 30 years gave us tons of new technology and advancements in science. In the last 30 years, NASA hasn't produced shit.

What the Hell are you talking about? If it hadn't been for NASA and Bruce Willis, that asteroid would have killed us all. :finger:

Could it be that the melting ice is giving a swamp cooler effect?

I have one

I got $20 that says less than half of this board knows what a swamp cooler is.

I know, I know. Thats funny you should say that as my buddy just got back from a 1 month vacation out west, and he explained to me what they were. Very interesting stuff, or at least it was to him.

Did he tell you how they were "invented"?

No, how were they invented? I am sure it has something to do wit ha swamp.

Not quite. The workers who were building the Hoover Dam lived in tents. As you can imagine, the southern Nevada desert in a tent was a bit warm. They found that if they soaked down the canvas of the tent, the evaporative effect kept the inside of the tent cool. Thus, swamp coolers were invented. (I have absolutely no idea why they're called swamp coolers.)

There are many different types of Swamp Coolers, theres the box fan with wet padding around it, theres the old fan blowing across ice or a pan of water, etc. I think the idea has been around for a long time, wikipedia say the Persian used to catch air over the roofs over their homes and then had it blow across a water catchment to cool the living space....

Probably called a swamp cooler because in a swamp their is a lot of water and you can feel the air that blows over the water cools you down when it's hot...

What about those beds where you can be jumping like a moron on one side, and a glass of wine won't spill on the other? Surely that is worth 30 years of tax money.

Those aren't from NASA, they copied the look of the logo but with the letters SPACE over it. :roflmao:

Anyone ever been close to the place where the shuttle lands. Im like a 100 mile from the place it has to land when in comes into California. Super loud SONIC BOOM makes the earth shake hard its pretty cool.

Yeah, we just got one this week here in Florida. Pretty cool. I thought the train had derailed just outside my office.

During my ships deployment with the Connie Battle Group in the Persian Gulf in 1997 we were the Air Command so we stayed right in front of the carrier during all exercises...I would go out every chance I got to watch the jets take off, it was cool to see the air explode around the nose and tail when they would do supersonic fly-bys... It was also cool to watch the afterburners at night....

Here HERE!!!

lets put more money into MILITARY R & D

(bring the troops home)

If we took the money we spent on one year of the war and put it toward scientific advancement, the US would once again be the undeniable champ of the cutting edge.

Too bad according to Bush, SCIENCE IS EVIL!!!!!:pissed:

OMG...

And maybe figured out a way to put some americans to work building and testing that new technology!?!?

Holy dog shit!?!? what a concept
