Went from about 287lbs at 6'5" down to about 196lbs.
Have been wanting to lose the weight ever since I was young but just didn't know how to start. I guess I never even bothered to LEARN how.
Anyway, my job consisted of sitting on my butt all day for 4 years. That didn't help and I would constantly overeat, usually all the bad stuff. I remember for months trying to eat healthy but couldn't get anywhere without exercise.
What did it for me was my vacation I had in Asia. I'm walking around all day and suddenly realize how out of shape I was. I told myself that when I came back I wouldn't start to exercise and eat healthy.
Came back and bought the Bowflex. At the time I didn't realize that free weights would have been just as effective, but I don't regret buying it for a second.
The first day I threw out all my junk/unhealthy food and went with the food suggested in the manual. From that day on I ate healthy. I told myself i'd give up sugary food, fried foods and yes, even beef (not that it's really needed).
I actually went with their suggestion and went on their 1500 calorie plan! I actually felt fine and was never sluggish or tired on it. But the problem with that is that I didn't see many muscle gains. I found myself being able to "lift" heavier weights but didn't see a whole lot of muscle being added, which is OK I guess -at least I was losing weight. It was practically melting off. I would always find myself buying new pairs of jeans and belts. I got so sick of buying new belts that I started poking holes in them!
The first week was the most difficult. I realized how out of shape I was. My muscles would shake and twitch on the lighest weights!
I eventually moved up to the body building routine at 6 weeks and found it pretty tough but stuck with it.
Believe it or not I honestly have to say I did not do many aerobic workouts, if any at all to lose the first 50lbs. When I was at 70lbs down I started to run.
At 12 weeks I found out about BODY-FOR-LIFE and tried to adapt that with the Bowflex. I drank some MRP's but couldn't always keep them stocked up because of being unemployed. I also was afraid that I was actually taking in more than I burned with the body-for-life plan. Isn't that the point though? To take in more with it than you burned to add muscle that will BURN away that extra fat? The BODY-FOR-LIFE program doesn't have you losing weight with a calori deficit right?
Right now I actually kind of wished I had eaten more than I had burned in a day at the 12-15 week mark. That would I could have gained more muscle.
Right now i'm 6'5" and 196lb but still have somewhat of a gut left to lose. People say "Travis, you don't need to lose any more weight, you're already skinny enough!" I guess i'm good at hiding my stomache!
I don't want to be skinny. Have that last few pounds of fat to lose. It has been EXTREMELY hard for me to lose it. Lately it seems that only when I eat a lot and regulary do I lose weight, probably because my metabolism is constantly up. For example, lately i've chowed down on maybe 2 quarter pounders this week and I still have lost weight. I really don't think quarter pounders are as evil as I once thought, but not that they are good.
Anyway, right now I do look too skinny in some areas. I want to gain lots of muscle now. I find it extremely difficult to eat a ton of food all day. It's even a challenge for me to eat 2000, no joke.
What are some good foods that make it easy to pack on the pounds of muscle without adding a ton of fat? Will adding this lean muscle help me just melt away that last 5-10lbs of fat?
Anyway, lately it's been difficult for me. Can't afford a gym since i'm unemployed and find it hard to buy a lot of food and always eat 6 meals a day. Are weight gainer shakes a good alternative to people that can't take in 6 meals a day. Right now it's hard to afford drinking 2-3 expensive MRP a day to add muscle.
When I was back working out 4 days a week for an hour and eventually switched over to eating more and taking in 200g of protein a day I still wasn't building a lot of muscle. Do I just need to take in more carbs or something? Also, what is the purpose of taking in say simple carbs after a workout? Does that help build muscle, even though it has lots of sugar in it?
