In my imagination.
Have ya'll heard this nonsense? Every major news outlet is reporting that Michael Phelps eats 12,000 calories a day. Bullshit! Smelly, stinky, bullshit!

How stupid can people be?

I dunno, he swims for at least 5-6 hours every day supposedly and I'm sure a guy his size in his shape has a BMR upwards of 3k. Considering how intensely he swims, they might not be far off.

I also don't believe it. I'm also curious to see exactly what his training regiment is like.

I agree that this is not true.

I've been reading on Phelp's physique, though. I don't know much about swimming but in addition to his diet and focus, he's physically gifted to succeed at swimming for several reasons.

Apparently being thin causes low drag, having long arms for propulsion, short legs (for his height) allow less drag, and his ankles are flexible, and his big big feet are good "flippers."

Interesting chap. And he's only 23 years old.

I'm not trying to hate on Phelps here...well maybe a little bit -

They now deem him the greatest olympic athlete ever. Now, I don't buy that. The last "greatest" olympic athlete was also a swimmer. Now that is either a HUGE coincidence considering the amount of events OR good swimmers have a much greater potentional for medaling several times compared to other athletes of the same caliber in different events.

Swimmers have several events to compete it and it is easier in their bodies to compete in all of them compared to other sports like track and field. You don't see guys competing in the 100,200, 400 and 800, etc. It just isn't physically feasible.

Now he is the man, but IMO the greatest olympic champion requires more than just lots of medals.

I heard 9,000.

Yeah they should be the Decathletes, they have to compete in so many events in 2 days it takes a tough person to do that:

The menâ??????s decathlon consists of ten events that are held on two consecutive days. The first dayâ??????s events include, in order, a 100-meter run, the long jump, shot put, high jump and a 400-meter run. The second dayâ??????s events, in order, include the 110-meter hurdles followed by the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and a 1500-meter run.

Agreed.

Also, the 12000 cals a day is a bit far-fetched. If he were eating 5 meals a day, that would be 2400 cals per meal, which just doesn't jibe. 9,000 sounds closer to reality, but is still 1800 per meal. I think they used creative math, they found out what he eats and figured it with types of foods that normal people ate. They said he ate a whole pizza for dinner. He may have, but I doubt it was the kind of pizza a Minnesota woman eats for dinner. Also, his breakfast sounds huge, but 4 eggs, oatmeal, toast, and pancakes would add up to 1000-1200 cals for an athlete, or 2000 cals for a fat woman cooking everything up in fatback and using a whole bottle of syrup.

Also the fact that he is a mutant should disqualify him and make him have to compete in the special Olympics.

That just screams everything that being an olympian is all about. Damn...how beat up would you be at the end of that 2 days?

What does he eat after celebrating a win?
cheeseburger and French fries.

Phelps is huge in every sense, except personality. He is 6-4 with a 6-7 wingspan and has size 14 feet that propel him through the water like one of those battery-powered bath toys with flippers - only much, much faster.
You know what they say about a mans big feet. :eyebrow:

Here are some other factoids: Phelps was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder at age nine, around the time his parents divorced. His mother, Debbie, is an activist on the issue of ADD.
So ADD is good for something.
He is recovering from a broken wrist. He practices nearly without end, lap after maddening lap. For his efforts, Phelps is very rich already, with $5 million in endorsements. If he wins seven golds here, he will get an additional $1 million bonus from Speedo.

Agreed.

I could see him eating on the north side of 10,000 calories just because if you take into the fact that he is probably slamming energy drinks (gatorade, vitamin water, etc) all day long to maintain the necessary energy to train with the sort of volume that he does.

It is hard to classify him as the greatest olympian ever...................but what criteria would you use to justify this title? It is difficult because every sport is different. Basketball players are no less of an athlete nor is a gymnist. However because of the nature of swimming Phelps monopolizes the medal count.

Regardless it is difficult, in not impossible, to give the man a great deal of respect because he is, no doubt, a great olympian!

I don't think he eats 12,000. I have a friend about 6'2 180. And during the middle of swim season. His coach told him that he needs to eat atleast 5000 calories a day to maintain his weight. So its probably not 12,000. But I bet he eats alot of calories.

A seasonal swimmer is not the even remotely the same. With Phelps, you are talking about a guy that his only job is to swim 5-6 hours a day almost every day of the week throughout the year. Never mind the intensity he needs to put into his swim. I'd also say 9-11K calories. Think of how much he burns.........

Also need to mention that his now required to do weightlifting workouts, something that only started in the past year.

When is he going to fit 5-6 hours of training in if he is consuming 12,000 calories?

LOL! Have you seen his average diet? It's insane but it's also foods that most of us here wouldn't touch on a daily basis. Lots of high calorie foods and he drinks about 4K in calories of energy drinks. I wanted to throw up just reading about his diet. He burns about 8000K a day in swimming.........insane!

Well I trust your knowledge over mine, so I guess I concede and admit I must be wrong. I just have such a hard time believing it until I see his diet written down with calories tallied up.

Exactly. Thats why I said he eats alot of calories. I would like to see what he eats daily.

I read online that he drinks thousands of calories a day from energy drinks. That can't be to healthy.....

I kind of want to see his average diet.

Do you know where to find it?

Ahh crap.. Can't view it here at work.. Guess I'll have to wait til later.

Thanks ;)

"For breakfast: three fried egg sandwiches, with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, fried onions and mayonnaise, followed by three chocolate-chip pancakes; a five-egg omelette; three sugar-coated slices of French toast and a bowl of grits (a maize-based porridge), washed down with two cups of coffee.

For lunch: half a kilogram (one pound) of enriched pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches on white bread smothered with mayonnaise, washed down by energy drinks.

For dinner: Another half-kilogram of pasta, perhaps with a carbonara sauce, followed by a large pizza and more energy drinks.

That combination may not sound very healthy, and at a staggering 10,000 calories, would feed five average men for a day."

In other article I saw it says all his eggs are cooked in lots of olive oil too.

Yah this is crazy...

I wonder how long his bosy will metabolize this stuff...
I see this changing before the next olympics (4 years)

Plus I wonder if he just chowed down one day to show off in front of some reporter

That is what I believe. That much food would make his abdominal walls burst. And then he is going to go train on top of that. I just have a hard time believing it.
