MSM protects muscles during physical exertion, this website has reported several times. Thanks to an in vitro study that Korean researchers at Konkuk University published in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine, we understand a little better how. At the molecular level, MSM reduces the negative effect of the stress hormone cortisol on muscle cells.Cortisol and muscles

Horse racing has quickly become an important industry in South Korea. [cnn.com August 28, 2019] The research that this post is about is a result of that. It is intended to find a nutritional strategy that allows racehorses to perform better. By the way, the study was not funded by a supplement producer, but by the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture.Previously published molecular resreach has shown that when the concentration of cortisol rises and the muscle cells are under physical stress, the activity of the tumor suppressor protein p53 increases, as does the activity of succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit A [SDHA] and hypoxanthine phosphoribosyl transferase 1 [HPRT1].
Study
In any case, the last two enzymes are important markers of physical stress due to intensive physical activity in horses. Hence, in petri dishes, the researchers exposed muscle cells to cortisol and 50 millimoles of MSM, and looked at the effect on p53, SDHA and HPRT1.

Results
And yes: MSM blocked the effects of cortisol. [Figure]
