If you'll have noticed both actors who had the chance to become Dr. Gonzo carry that character into other roles later. You can see the HST imitations in Bill Murray's Caddyshack character with the mumbling to himself and all out insanity, you can see them in Depps recent characters as the pirate(almost exactly resembles his Fear and Loathing quirks) and a little bit in Finding Neverland and Willy Wonka.
