novarapid insulin safe use

Hey guys. Ive been using steroids for 5 years now and feel its time for insulin as im struggling to gain weight. I have access to novarapid flex pen type insulin. I would like to know how to store it correctly. Ive read that you are suppost to use within 30 days of opening. However my flex pens hold 300iu and I only plan to use 2-6 iu a day.??? I would also like to know what meals ppl have after the shot ect. I know insulin use is dangerous if not used correctly but if you use it correctly is it safe??? Thanks
