Rescue attempt by Hollywood actor Sean Penn founders in New Orleans

Efforts by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

But I will say this.

If Sean Penn is doing this because he genuinely cares about people and wants to help, that's great. And....even if he is doing it to make himself feel better about himself, that fine.

If he's doing it for publicity - which I don't really think he is - then I would call him a wanker.

wait.. I read that wrong... why have the "personal photographer" there to only take up room & for pictures of him?

I think in Penn's twisted Holywood mind, he thought that, he could help...

But, I also guarantee, that some publicist put the idea in his head
that he could actually fly down there, and make a difference...
(Instead of just donating, or making some public appearances)

And he was stupid enough to go

Maybe he was actually trying to help, not every actor or rich people are looking for promotion when they do good things.

and those paparazzi seem to be everywhere.

maybe. i just think with his resources he could have had a fleet of volunteers out on boats he provides... not a single tiny leaky boat loaded up with his team that included his photographer.

Maybe I'm just a cynic :(

and maybe he took the photographer to take pictures of the situation on the streets.

I don't think you are, I was going to post this yesterday when I first started reading this.
The thread was going to be "Sean Penn does good" but then I read further down and I saw where he "brought along" photographers....I said to myself he is using this for slef promotion.

If you do something out of the kindness of your heart it shouldn't matter who see's it. You should not expect rewards for doing something you really are supposed to do and that's to help your fellow man.

God, I sound like a sap.

heres some unofficial dialogue from the boat, after the water started coming in.

Sean Penn(To his personal advisor) "Wow, this is embarassing, Im starting to regret that I brought the photographer. I hope those pictures dont get published."

Personal Advisor "Then you'll soon regret you brought the reporter too."

Sean Penn ".....

fuuuuuhhhhhck."

I think Sean Penn is caught up in his own little socialist utopia fantasy. He's actually buying into his own hype and look where it gets him. Now Penn is just another dumbass in NO sitting around twiddling his thumbs.

Just as another example of his distorted vision of the world, I remember him visiting a public prayer in Iran where chants of "Death to America" were ringing out. Penn is then quoted, "I understand the nature of where it comes from and what its intention is... but I don't think it's productive because I think the message goes to the American people and it is interpreted very literally."

Uhh... maybe cuz the intention is indeed literal?

I like Sean Penn's effort to help out more than Kanye West's effort.

Thats true... Sean Penn just wanted a small notice in a paper to feed his ego. Kanye needed to know the whole world was listening to feed his

To all ye naysayers, how many lives are you saving with that computer you're typing up slanderous diatribes on? Sean at least was able to rescue a few folks before springing a leak. Have you ever tried to navigate flooded waters in a boat? There are so many hazards it's easy to hit something that could puncture your vessel. I remember the year Lake Somerville in Texas, where our lake home was, flooded and we went out in our bass boat and hit a submersed barbed wire fence post that put a nasty dent in the underside of our boat. What makes you think the photographer was there just for Penn's own selfish reasons and not because Penn wanted to document the devastation in a truthful light? I have found that Penn's come a long way since his Madonna day's he seems to have an honest interest in getting firsthand glimpses of some of the largest events facing our nation lately, if I had the money I too would try to get a "real" look at what's going on since you can't trust todays media to give you an even near accurate account of whats "really going on".

I think he should have dropped a few extra bucks and bought a few boats that were a bit more rugged, but in the end it's the thought that counts and several stranded individuals are super appreciative of his recuing them and the money he gave them to get by in the meantime.

In my eyes Sean Penn is an upstanding American and epitomizes the spirit of whom I view a model citizen, you know he risked his multi-million dollar earning ass to make a statement by going into a disaster area to offer aid personally and not just dumping a few hundred thousand and sitting at home.

Sean Penn's personal attempt to help victims of Hurricane Katrina went a little awry when his boat sprung a leak.

The Hollywood actor desperately tried to help those stranded by the devastating floods by launching a boat down the water-logged streets of New Orleans.

But, according to Australia's Melbourne Herald Sun, he was forced to bail out with a red plastic cup when the vessel started filling with water.

The 'Mystic River' star encountered further problems when the motor didn't start, forcing him and his crew to paddle by hand.

However, despite the technical hitches, Penn - who was accompanied by a personal photographer - managed to bring several people to dry land.

He said: "I'm doing whatever I can do to help. There's a lot of people out there. There's bodies everywhere. We could only do so many houses."

After rescuing the victims, the Oscar-winning actor gave them money and even took some of them to hospital.

Thankful Johnnie Brown, 73, who was picked up by Penn, told his sister over the phone: "Guess who come and got me out of the house? Sean Penn, the actor. The boys were really nice."

You guys are pissed at him what about everytime you watch CNN or FOX and see footage of the flood with a reporter in a boat? That cameraman and news reporter are 2 places in a boat that could be occupied by victims clinging to the fast dispersing fumes of desperation soon to be the next bloated body for the next crowded boat of news seeking "rescue" parties to suck into the lenses of their cameras and beam to your television or front page of your black & gray, day late 50 cent crystal ball. Sean Penn is one man who at least tried to do right, where as all the media outlets are several people wasting valuable space and resources to give redudant footage of the same chaos we've been witnessing looped over and over on CNN, FOX, MSNBC, etc. SO you know what? Fuck all of you downing a man who I would anyday be willing to call a friend.

Douglas Brinkley, the presidential historian who teaches at Tulane University, was at Penn's side. "There was never a leak," he tells us. "The boat was overloaded with people. It got some water in it, as boats usually do.

"I witnessed him rescuing up to 40 people," says Brinkley, who was assigned by Rolling Stone editor Will Dana to write about New Orleans' recovery. "He was up to his waist in toxic muck .... I'm not going to comment on Sean's trips to Iraq or Iran, but in this case, he was an American hero."

And if he was there merely for PR reasons then why wasn't he screaming for attention on Sunday when he arrived? We heard little to nothing about him until someone caught him in a abd moment and now the only news you find on him is all the stories calling him a tool, boob and idiot.

Though I feel his motives included self promotion, in the end he helped people who needed it. You're right manic, I have no right to say anything about him.

Celebrities getting involved in political issues.. which Sean Penn is no stranger to.. always pisses me off. However, I should step back & look at the bigger picture & not get distracted by unimportant shit.

My bad.
