Chinese researchers from Qingdao University traced 9 studies involving a total of 9,397 study participants. In those studies, the researchers had determined the quality of the participants' sleep, as well as the subjects' vitamin D levels. Results
When the researchers put the results of these studies together, they found that a lack of vitamin D increased the risk of sleep disturbances by 50 percent compared to an adequate vitamin D status. For the calculations on which the figure below is based, the researchers used a cut off level of 20 ng/mL. That is the same as 50 nmol/L.
Anything below this level was vitamin D deficient.

When the researchers broke down their data, they found that a lack of vitamin D increased the likelihood of poor sleep quality, lack of sleep and daytime sleepiness.
