The U.S. Army is investigating a possible link between the death of two soldiers and popular dietary supplements containing dimethylamylamine, or DMAA. The New York Times reports that the supplements were available on U.S. military bases until recently.
Both soldiers died last year after they suffered heart attacks during fitness exercises.
The supplements, which are sold under brands including Jack3d and OxyElite Pro, contain DMAA, which is advertised to increase concentration, energy and metabolism. They are sold at stores including GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe, as well as online, the article notes.
The Army has removed all products with DMAA from military base stores, pending the completion of an Army safety review.
???We are concerned about reports of heat illness, kidney (and) liver damage, and sudden death in service members who reportedly used products containing DMAA,??? Dr. Michael Kilpatrick, the Deputy Director of Force Health Protection and Readiness Programs with the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Health Protection and Readiness, said in an Army statement.
The statement notes DMAA is often combined with caffeine, which may accelerate metabolism, heart rate and blood pressure. These in turn may increase the body???s production of heat, especially in hot and humid conditions.
The World Anti-Doping Authority, which regulates drug use by Olympic athletes, has listed DMAA as a banned stimulant, as have several professional sports leagues.

This was an auto email I get from my affiliation with counseling and thought it might be worth a discussion. It seems the extenuating circumstance here is the factor of heat/humidity and vigorous exercise combined with dimethylamylamine.

This is similar to how ephedrine being sold as a fat burner got banned. Two football players died from dehyrdation during hell week, but they found ephedrine in their system, so the ephedrine was blamed, not the idiot coach who denied water breaks and fatal dehyrdation set in. It was a good way to deter legal liability to the coach & school, and the witch hunt for ephedrine being sold as a fat burner was launched.

I'm willing to bet those soliders had some other primary cause of death, but they found DMAA in their system, so the low hanging fruit to point the finger at to avoid liability or controversy is found :dont:

Same thing with roids, some politician's son committed suicide where roids were found in his system, so rather then looking in the mirror as to consider the real root of the issue, the politician launches a crusade against roids and supplements in general, because the incompleted 12 week cycle killed his son via roid depression(?), not years of unhappiness and perhaps an absent father due to policital ambitions. All these supplement conspiracies are suspect.

Dimethylamylamine HCL....

New research suggests that the products currently on the market that contain it seem to have had this chemical added to them and that it may not be native to the plant. However, it is still possible that there are legitimate sources of this chemical in geranium and some new and pending products claim to contain it naturally.

It is NOT legal in most of the main sports federations. The IOC has already banned at least one athlete for it, as have other organizations.

This ingredient is like ephedrine. Its stimulant effects lie somewhere between caffeine and amphetamine. If we assume it has many of the same effects of ephedrine (which is a pretty safe assumption), then it will decrease appetite, increase metabolic rate, increase energy and focus during exercise and increase performance in some instances - depending upon the type of activity and conditions. Users report exactly these effects.

However, unlike ephedrine, there are no studies on performance or weight loss with "1,3" or geranium, so no one knows for sure if it has these effects.

With Volcom on this one. You see these threads all the time, especially over on the anabolic side. We'll ban this with ZERO proof but let things like High Fructose Corn Syrup stay legal. Which BTW have proven negative health effects, to include deaths. This country is pathetic.

I hear ya bro, but please don't throw the baby out with the bath water. America is the greatest nation in the world, but there are a great deal of s-heads that make for a real hard stay! Hoo-Rah!

Caffeine combined with other stims can definitely kill a person.

Massive Dose of Caffeine Kills British Man

By KIM CAROLLO, ABC News Medical Unit
Nov. 3, 2010

A 23-year-old British man died from what the coroner said was a dangerous dose of caffeine, according to British media reports.

Information from the coroner's inquest revealed that Michael Lee Bedford ingested two spoonfuls of pure caffeine powder that he washed down with an energy drink. Coroner Dr. Nigel Chapman said the dose Bedford consumed was equivalent to 70 cans of Red Bull.

"This should serve as a warning that caffeine is so freely available on the Internet but so lethal if the wrong dosage is taken," Chapman said at the inquest.

A warning label on the product said only one-sixteenth of a teaspoon should be taken, but Bedford far exceeded that amount.

"He wasn't doing anything wrong, it was just the danger of the dose he took," said Chapman.

Though toxicologists in the U.S. say they're not aware of any cases of people overdosing on caffeine powder, they say that caffeine overdoses are on the rise thanks in large part to the wide availability of caffeine-loaded energy drinks. They believe that increased consumption of these drinks can lead to caffeine abuse, which can lead to significant illness, injury and even death.

"It's already a big problem," said Bruce Goldberger, professor and director of toxicology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. "we're a chemical-based society, because so many of us rely on psychotropic drugs to get by every day."

"Truck kills man that walked out into the street." Bystanders say the man didn't look he just walked right out in traffic.

Same shit, stupidity and the process of natural selection. The problem is everyone else with functioning brain matter pays a price as well.

^^^^ This.

I mean, come on. Have used Jack3d but then I pass on the coffee. The boost is great but I'm not doubling up.

Not that I think a cup of coffee and a scoop of Jack3d will put me in the ground, but is it really necessary? One or the other is sufficient.

Young guys abuse the f** outta themselves, especially these kids in the military or sports. My friend slimmed down using jack3d, he went through a tub a week. Its absolutely insane....

Been coaching football for years..youth to high school /JC level..

Coaches need to take responsibilty for pushing those kids/adults ..

High temperatures, particularly when combined with high humidity, and strenuous physical activity. Without prompt treatment, heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke. Fortunately, heat exhaustion is preventable

Now i've used my fair share of pre-workouts, but to go through a TUB of Jack3d a week is crazy business

i don't agree with this idea, anything have two side, nobody can see one side only,it's nor fare for anybody!

Yup. There were popular articles a few years ago about two bumpkins who ran like triple dose M-Drol for double the suggested time and with no PCT, then tried to sue because they ended up all facked up. Abuse of anything can make "healthy" things, bad for you.
