TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO - HE IS THE MARICOPA
COUNTY
SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for
them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails.

Took away their weights.Cut off all but "G" movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county
and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for
discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order
that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again
only
let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot
it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton.
If
you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into
the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he
replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the
inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix(116 degrees
just
set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000
inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the
Maricopa CountyJailhave been given permission to strip down to their
government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled
up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees
inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their
chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate
who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city
and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna
sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told
all of
the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraqand our soldiers are living in
tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't
commit
any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would
be
a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished
for
their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only
to
go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on
taxpayers
money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Pink is a nice color

Just out of curiosity, how many packs of smokes does it cost for a meal?

What is his policy on the anal rapes?

I used to live in phoenix and the funniest news story was when the female chain gangs were started. For about 2 weeks prior to the chain gangs all the liberal reporters were having a field day with how awful this was to treat women this way. The news was plastered with if non-stop. THen the big day came when the women were out there. here is how the first (and last) interview went with the inmates on the chain gang.

Dumb ass reporter: "dont you feel that this is a violation of your rights to have you out here woking on an illegal chain gang" (note the non-biased question)

Inmate: "Are you crazy?? Do you know how hard it was to qualify to be on one of these chain gangs? I have had to be on best behavior doing extra jobs just to get the chance to be out here!"

Dumb ass reporter: (Bewildered look on her face)"Huh!....You want to be out here?"

Inmate: "You tell me where you would rather be...Sitting on your butt in a tiny cell...or outside on a beautiful day picking up trash?"

That was about the last time any reporter interviewed an inmate or this story made the news. :rocker:

That dudes a crackpot. He didn't even invent the "tent city" idea. He autographs the pink underwear and sales them for $10.

Phoenix New Times columnist John Dougherty writes: "Ar-paio conned the public when he put up a facade that the Glenn Campbell was sweating out his 10-day jail sentence, stemming for a DUI conviction, in notorious Tent City. Campbell actually served his time in the Mesa Hilton. Rather than wearing stripes and sweltering in a tent jammed with stinky dudes sleeping on double bunks...He was even allowed to bring his guitar, cell phone and a therapeutic mattress to his private suite."

He really fears Dougherty and has even had him physically removed for asking the wrong questions.

Here's how it all went down:

Dougherty approached Joe at his victory rally inside a ballroom at the Phoenix Civic Plaza that had been rented for the evening by the county elections department. When Arpaio caught sight of him, he snarled, "I don't talk to you!"

Dougherty asked, "When are you going to respond to our public records requests, sir?"

"Will you get rid of this guy!" Arpaio growled to his bodyguards.

A gaggle of county cops then stampeded Dougherty, who continued to shout out his question, onto the sidewalk, threatening him with arrest if he didn't shut up.

After the incident, Channel 3 reporter Mike Watkiss heard Arpaio make what would have been an astounding comment for a less paranoid politician, particularly somebody who'd just won a primary election. Watkiss -- who got it all on tape -- quotes Arpaio as saying to a deputy about Dougherty's daring to question the sheriff in a public place on election night: "We ought to write that up as a threat." It was classic Arpaio, whose ridiculous vendettas against enemies big and small are legendary. Joe's admitted to New Times in the past that he's never felt seriously threatened during his county career. His threat squad seems to spend most of its time investigating those criticizing the sheriff's policies rather than probing anybody who's an actual menace to the geezer's health.

also, prison is supposed to be about rehabiliting inmates so they can go back into society, so that should also be a focus.

I'm not against the idea, but some of the inmates are awaiting trial. How would you like to be innocent and have to live like that? I have lived like that for 3 month on board the USS Lake Erie when our AC plant went down in the 90 degree waters of the Persian Gulf, sleeping was unbearable, laundry had mixed my berthings whites load with the flight crews colored coveralls load and the underwear and shirts were a beautiful shade of pink. Porn wasn't allowed and the only movies they broadcast were what the Chaplain had approved. We had 2 suicide attempts in those month's.

"Prison" is a one word that covers all manor or incarceration. A "drug dealer" selling tren would be in the same prison as a guy that had his capital murder plead down to a second degree murder conviction. A child molestor would also be in the same place. Out of these people who would be in need of justice as a component of his/her prison sentance? A harsh prison environment is considered by society as part of the justice process. Child molestors are supposed to endure that prison justice. Rehabilitation could work on the drug dealer, but does a harsh prison environment need to be thrown in thie mix?

why do they get to keep disney? You take away the porn but leave the Hillary Duff? Kinda defeats the purpose don't ya think?

I think the solution would be to divide prisons up into 3 different categories:

1. "full priviledges": those awaiting trial, or serving short sentences.
2. "medium priviledges": longer sentences, but for crimes other than murder, child molesting, etc.
3. "NO priviledges": the most severe like the prison described above which would be for life sentences, murderers, child molesters, etc.

as far as suicide attempts for those that are in "category #3", who gives a shit, let them kill themselves, in fact give them the means to do it too.

Let the ax murderer kill the child molestor and save us the taxes on his upkeep. Or Just UPS the freak to me and I'll take it over from there :thumb: free of charge.

The fast track to exicution is not a solution because of the time it takes to catch up with wrongful convictions. Shit happens ... the wrong guy does get convicted.

You're right. As Jesus said as he died on the cross "Forgive them Father for they know not what they do." What a bleeding heart pansy fucker, he should have ripped his hands off that cross and beat everyones head in with rocks and then called for hellfire and brimstone to rain down from the heavens and destroy the world. Just got it all over with then instead of keeping us in gleeful anticipation of the Doomsday Apocalypse.

The quote of Jesus, would have made a great response, but instead you had to go and ruin it by adding YOUR thoughts. lol

Wow..sounds like a tough prison. Up here in Canada if inmates were ever treated like that, people would go nuts. Prison is bad enough. Chain gangs up here would be considered slave labour. Inmates don't need smokes or any luxuries (including cable tv) but taking away exercise equipment is nuts.

A prison like that is not humane. Sure some of the inmates have committed crimes that are not humane but the majority of the inmates are in there for non violent offences, some of them are totally innocent.

Child molesters/sexual predators deserve horrible punishment and they get it in a regular pen. They have to spend their time in protective custody if they want to survive.

A federal penitentiary is a tough place, most people have not idea what goes on behind the bars. If anyone thinks the Canadian prison system is weak and soft they should read 'Go-Boy' & 'Bingo' by Roger Caron.

I know a prison system like that would not work in Canada..I can promise you that it would not take very long for the prisoners to riot..it would not be a very safe work enviroment for anyone working in Corrections.

Perfectly said.
I like the guy. Sounds like he's changing the norm. Is he really selling signed pink underwear?

Most violent criminals start off committing not violent crimes. The goal of this jail is not the same as a regular pen, the goal is to make them think twice before doing something stupid again when they get out.

That is because they would run the risk of offending the prisoners. LMOA

The majority of these prisoners are not the same as you would see in a max security pen. And these guys out here in AZ are too damn tired to riot. It's 115 degrees outside. lol
