Turn off the TV, says Arnie - if they're speaking Spanish

KBM I don't disagree with what you say, personally my problem is when they start pushing thier langauge to me. I had 2 people tell me I better learn spanish becuase that will be the official langauge spoken.

I doubt that it will be Spanish. . .though it appears that increasing numbers of children are learning some Chinese dialects as early as grade school now.

Most English dialects spoken in the various regions of the United States were affected by immigrants - that is why we have linguistic differences among Americans living in different parts of the country. Language is nothing more than a set of symbols in which meaning is agreed upon by members of a speech community and those meanings change and vary constantly even among English speakers in this country.

For example, in the Midwest, if you go to the supermarket, you pull out a shopping cart to do the shopping. In many parts of the South, it is called a buggy. People eventually assimilate because there are limitations in their ability to communicate among larger members of the population or in terms of international business. Even if the majority of Americans spoke Spanish, the differences in dialect would create issues of understanding.

Should Americans learn to speak other languages? Well, yep - if we want to remain competitive in the world marketplace, its a good idea. Most of our competitors have large populations who speak several languages.

So tell those two people you'll pass on the Spanish, and learn Chinese - because you want to earn money.

Ha! My beef with the Asians are those damn store signs, they should at least have English along side thier signs.

If the germans, Italians, Greeks and Irish didn't complain about learning English what makes the Hispanic so special?

My mother learned English and she did all of the above with no problem.

Boom!

There it is right there. Almost every emigrant to come here learned English to better their chances of survival and making a better life for their family. They never bitched about this shit. They helped start the industrial revolution that turned the US into number 1.

Mexicans haven't done shit but bitch, cry, moan, and demand shit. I'm tired of catering to the demands of Mexican invaders. They are the piss ants of our picnic basket we call the US.

Huh? And when did this miraculous transformation into speaking beloved English occur for these Euro immigrants? In one town in Iowa, for example, a Norwegian newspaper was published until the 1960s. . .it is usually second generation that is most likely to become bilingual, and the third ends up using English as a primary language in this country.

And why just pick on the Mexicans? One trip to Miami and you'll see it flooded with Cubans, Central Americans and Caribbean nationals, many of whom do not have citizenship status.

Wasn't it the imported Chinese coolies who built much of the railroad link from the American East to San Francisco? And then were rewarded for their efforts by being restricted in their movement in the city and confined to certain neighborhoods. I thought the U.S. Capitol building was primarily built by slaves of African descent. . .and because most of them weren't allowed to go to school, their English was often a mixture of old country terms and words overheard spoken by the massas.

Besides, you live in the South. Those Southerners still haven't learned real American English...ya'll still say "buggy" in the supermarket and eat those damned boiled peanuts, which, if the truth be told, could have caused the Yankees to set the whole region free once and for all after only one taste. . .

:hehe:

Most likely coastal Alabamans speak a dialect with roots in French, a bit of Spanish, and English. . .a variety of Inland Southern.

Hmm...check out the documentary "Do You Speak American?"

I fuckin love boiled peanuts. Cajun style please.

I had some deep fried alligator the other day that was pretty good. I peeled the batter crap off it though, so I guess I can't really say I had fried alligator.... okay so I had some "cooked" pieces of alligator. They were pretty good. Anyway enough about Cajun food.

Honestly there are language melds in other parts of the US besides just where there are Mexicans, but I must say having grown up in California and visiting Southern California and parts of Texas several times, the Mexican population in a lot of places appears to be content with not learning our language. I won't say much because I don't even know enough to say this is a big problem... but I do believe that if a Mexican individual is struggling making piss poor wages working fields or some other place that caters to non-english speaking immigrants, learning English would probably help CONSIDERABLY in them being more successful here.

It's not about forcing them to learn it, it's about encouraging them to learn it so they have better chances at getting a more wide array of jobs or get further education.

If I were to move to another country say in Europe for example where there is a U.S. military base (that would be an example of a place where there would be more bi-lingual environment for me to thrive in) regardless of the translated signs and tourist catering bi-lingual people... I would still desire to learn the language just to be more comfortable in my environment.

I am educated. I can and do speak proper English everyday. When I am dealing with customers, everything is prim and proper with a "yes mam, no mam" southern twist. I am a fine speaker of my native language. I also can speak broken Alabamian, backwoods redneck, Theodore hill billy, Mobilain, and finally one accent that is completely my own creation that is like no other, and that I speak when I am intoxicated. Most likely the intoxicated "me" is the most real "me" that you will ever hear. I also speak some Spanish and I want to work on it some more so that I can speak it fluently. I want to travel to Mexico one day, because parts of their country are beautiful.

I have pondered at the notion that I would really enjoy retiring early and living in Mexico. I am also in love with Latin women. They are among my favorite looking women of the world.

Basically, you don't know shit about me.

Well, I do now. . .

And try Costa Rica. . .much less civil unrest.

Check out that documentary. . .you'll find it interesting.

I hate it when people say MEERS when they read the word MIRRORS, or PITCHER instead of PICTURE, or FITTIN instead of FIXING, or TATERS instead of POTATOES... these are not difficult words to pronounce properly.

I had a really awful southern draw, and pronounced words wrong much in the same way as the examples you listed. When I left home for college. I caught hell about it, but most of it was from girls, so there wasn't shit I could do. Guys never said much, but girls were fucking brutal, bad enough that I taught myself how to speak more like the people there. Mobile is nothing like the rest of the south. Mobile has a youth culture that is as diverse as New York city. It blows pretty bad when you are trying to talk to a girl at a club and the first thing they do is laugh and ask where the fuck I am from.

Lawl, now I wouldn't care. Everything about how I look is completely me, and I don't give a shit what people on the street think of me anymore, but I clean up for work. My septum piercing gets flipped inside my nose, so it can't be seen, and I put on nice cloths that are both professional, practical, and comfortable. Being able to balance being professional and being personal is a good skill to have. I think if you don't know when to conform and when not to, you will not be as successful in your life.

The number #1 problem most people have is not what race they are it's the sheer number that migrates from mexico.

NYC was called the meltiing pot of America with good reason, all Countries come here first to make their money.
We have neighborhoods with different ethnic groups, you have the Italians from Bay Ridge, the Hasidics from Williiamsburg, the Polish from greenpoint, the Blacks from Harlem, the Domenicans from Washington Hieghts, the PR's from spanish harlem, the Indians from Jackson hieghts , the drag queens from Elmhurts and the gays from the village.

I've seen groups come in small bunches but never the amount like the Mexicans.

Control the numbers coming in.

How do you encourage a whole race of people not write all over everyone else's property? Show a level of social dignity that's above the shitty country they come from?

There are neighborhoods in L.A. with 3rd (or more) generation Mexicans living in it that look like it was lifted up from somewhere in Mexico and dropped into the US.

Nice. Compassionate. Doesn't apply. This is an invasion by a people with the intent to occupy and abuse our system. First time that has ever happened on this scale.

As long as liberals allow this to continue the country is screwed. If you find yourself desiring to feel all warm and tolerant about the wetback mowing your lawn then I suggest you invest in this.

Oh, come on. The entire history of this country is about immigration...sometimes waves of it from one region. Every "American" comes from someplace else - and ethnic/cultural ghettoes are nothing new in this country. Don't we have different rules for the Cubans who drop in here on a raft? What about the Central Americans. . .the Guatemalans, the Hondurans, the Nicaraguans, the Salvadorans and the Panamanians. .. the Columbians and the Venezuelans and all those Jamaicans living in New York and South Florida? Hell, all of the Irish illegals who can't easily be identified because they already know English, look Euro, and fit right in?

Boo hoo, cry me a river. Mexicans that jump our border are trash. They are criminals. They are not citizens, yet they are treated by our government with more rights than the countries citizens. When they issue a drivers license, free out of state tuition, and free medical care to an illegal alien when I am having to pay for all of that shit, I get pissed off. I don't even want to be part of a system that is so fucked up. What it causes me to do, is try and figure out how to beat the system and make it work for me. I'm not going to be a working stiff for too long.

I'm sorry, but those writers seem a bit too paranoid.

From what I understand all crimes are commited by immigrants and not Americans?
 ... it's a list of victims. People who's lives were ended or destroyed by non-American criminals.

So the Mexicans are the cause for the Salvadoran gangs that are spread out in the Southeast and parts of the East Coast? Or the Jamaican street gangs?
Or turning Miami into a South American city?

There's an illegal immigration problem. Trying to pin the entire thing on one nationality isn't gonna solve much of anything.

Nah you didn't catch the focus of my point here. It's not just the Mexicans that are the issue, it's ALL illegal aliens here. We need the fence, we need to ALL be aware of the trouble we are in and act on it. That link was to show the horrors of no border security and the need for it, not to say only Mexicans are the criminals. All those you mentioned and all those you didn't all get here by just walking in. THAT needs to stop.

Make sense?

That won't do much to keep the thousands of Irish citizens who walk right in illegally and set up house in this country.

And fences are used just as often to keep people IN as they are to keep people OUT.

All that Arnold said was expose yourself to more English so that you can pick it up easier. He didn't say throw away your culture nor did he say quit being Mexican. He just gave a tip on how to learn a new language, it was something that worked for him as an immigrant and he was just passing along his knowledge. I guess because he said it may be politically incorrect most people just assumed it was then...but it wasn't.

Does anyone else not realize that most of his criticism came from Mexican speaking media? I mean come on of course the media is going to complain about Arnold saying it should stop being watched.... DUH!

Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Sure they are. . .especially since he used their media heavily during his political campaign - and apparently received quite a good monetary contribution from them.

well yeah, he is a politician. As much as I admire the man, I don't trust political figures.
