The most frequent complaint of cancer patients is fatigue. A diet with a relatively high amount of vitamin B3 reduces this complaint, Dutch researchers report in Nutrients. At the same time, a diet high in vitamin B3 reduces depression and anxiety.

Researchers from Maastricht University in the Netherlands studied 145 patients who had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer 2-10 years earlier. Using questionnaires, the Maastricht scientists determined the patients' daily intake of nicotinamide - say: vitamin B3 - and how much fatigue, depression and anxiety the patients experienced.Here you can read which foods contain a lot of vitamin B3.
Nicotinamide is a precursor of the 'energy molecule' NAD. The researchers wondered whether a diet high in NAD precursors could address the lack of energy that many cancer survivors struggle with.
Results
The more vitamin B3 the study participants consumed, the better their lives were 2-10 years after their diagnosis. The cancer survivors with the highest intake of vitamin B3 reported less fatigue, depression and anxiety.

Conclusion
"A higher intake of dietary nicotinamide is inversely associated with fatigue and anxiety symptoms reported by long-term colorectal cancer survivors, 2 to 10 years post-diagnosis", the Dutch summarize.

"Colorectal cancer survivors and health care professionals should be aware that having a balanced diet is of importance with respect to a sufficient nicotinamide intake."
"Further prospective and intervention studies are warranted to have a better understanding on the potential beneficial effects of nicotinamide and other NAD+ precursors on patient-reported outcomes such as fatigue, depression, and anxiety."
