"Almost all proteins have a desirable thermogenic effect except proteins high in fat, lunchmeats, and processed proteins. Unfortunately, as well, most single species protein powders such as whey concentrates and whey isolates also do NOT have much desirable thermogenic action."

I did a search on this and saw her say this on multiple occasions and I beleive it. However, I have searched and cannot answer this question:

How do I know which protein supplements are single-species?

She stated that many people's fat loss may be thwarted by this and I am seriously wondering if I do not have this problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Read the label. Simple as that. If it contains a blend or more than one type of protein (casien, protein, egg) than it isn't "single species.

Now, a few comments.

1) I don't know whether or not this statement is true regarding single species, but it is true that in general, protein has a thermic effect on your body (i.e. increases basal metabolism). Since I don't know, and W8 is typically correct about this stuff, I'll assume it is. (Note: W8, I'd like to see/read sources on this if you have any, thanks!)

2) Assuming this to be true, using whey cannot/will not "THWART" fat loss. Either you misunderstood, or she mis-"spoke". Think about it. If you eat only non-thermic protein, but eat fewer cals than you expend, you will lose fat. BUT, if you eat thermic foods, you will increase your metabolism and therefore increase fat loss. Put differently, you increase lipolysis by eating therminc foods, but you do not thwart it by not. For example, you don't thrwart fat loss by not using thermogenic supplements.

3) Assuming all that to be true, whey protein still has its place. Whey protein is the most easily digestible protein. Therefore, it is beneficial to take it at least immediately after your workout (some take it before and/or during). Blending it with another protein or adding fat will only slow absorption; not what you want after a stressful workout that will put you in a catabolic state unless you get nutrients in quickly.

Great post TP:thumb:

Thanks for the response, I will check into it.

As for thwarting fat loss, I think the basic point was that it was burned simply as calories...therefore, you got nothing but calories out of it. I should have posted that whole paragragh instead of just that one line.

Again, thanks for your time.

I understand what DP's point must have been.

My point was that you must understand exactly what the benefit is, as well as the cost. And it sounded like you though lipolysis would "shut down" if you used whey. Whatever DP wrote, I know he didn't mean that.

My take home message is, as to one meal (post w/o) the benefit of using whey (quick release of aminos and nutrients to the muscle cells) far outwheys (pun intended) the cost of using whey (no added thermic effect, prolly means you don't burn an extra couple of dozen cals tops). Period.

Gotcha! Thanks again.

No...what you saw was a source posted and then the article....that was "Beverly's"...followed by my commentary!

w8 and I use and contend that single species proteins work fine for most practical purposes! :D

(that was a good read...the Thread)
