those idiots make it sound like its impossible to get big without steroids, or to be a competitive bodybuilder without steroids.

Competitive on what level though :)

But yes, "if your son has no neck and traps out to here...." right. I have known a few people that are naturally really well built, those are some folks that with NO gear could really be pretty freaky, I can never convince them to work out though.

yeah ive noticed the same thing. i think a lot of people that are already above average naturally dont want to work out because they're already secure with their size. most teens work out partly or fully because of self image.

Two were kids constantly in trouble, either a bully or the other used to break into well to do peoples homes, did some time before (both his parents were thin he said). Other guy, just plain lazy, I think he was 5'9" 210.

Another guy that I used to see in the gym was 19, 6'3", and damn near about as wide as the doorway it seemed. He wasn't lean really, but very strong and didn't screw off when it came time to throw the weights around. I wish I had his shoulders, freakish.

how much of a difference can lifting make on how broad your shoulders are? i know a lot of it's bone structure, but i'd like to widen mine out.

I think its more effect than actual structural changes. I have heard that ultra wide grip deads help pull the clavicles out, but once your around 17-19 your body is "fused together."

I can tell you that after my 6 week layoff, I look alot narrower, not just traps but delts both play into that, as well as the neck.

Beat your ass doing side laterals, work the shoulders/traps/neck and it will greatly help the overall effect. I had to find something that was effective for traps, because regular shrugs seemed only half as effective as doing it on a side grip machine (like a dumbell). Dumbells are ok, but they stick against your leg and such and I prefer the machine.

With "ultra wide" deads you grab the lip of the plates on the bar. I first saw Greg Kovaks doing this in IronMan Magazine some years ago, when he was alot smaller...

Heck, back chest and however big your gut is are also going to play into that effect.

im only 15 1/2, and im not done growing, ive probably still got time. would i include wide grip dead with my shoulder workout or back or legs?

I do deads on a back day. Since you wont be as strong with this excersize, feel free to do it after your warmup set(s). As a disclaimer, the type of thinking that you can expand your ribcage and etc etc is a throwback to thinking that was believed back in Arnold's day (you'll find it in his Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding). Some people dont believe in it - although that may only be past a certain age, as Arnie said that no matter your age you could improve cage depth, and thusly width which is based on the same thinking.
