"It all started off as a game," Moore said.

The 15-year-old and his friends were taunting the homeless man -- throwing sticks and leaves -- after having a couple of beers with him.

No big deal, Moore says, but he's sorry for what came next.

It was a mistake, he said, a sudden primal surge that made him and his friends Luis Oyola, 16, and 17-year-old Andrew Ihrcke begin punching and kicking Baum.

"Luis says 'I'm gonna go hit him,' We're all laughing, thought he was joking around,'" but he wasn't, Moore concedes. "We just all started hitting him."

They hurled anything they could find -- rocks, bricks, even Baum's barbecue grill -- and pounded the 49-year-old with a pipe and with the baseball bat he kept at his campsite for protection.

Ihrcke smeared his own feces on Baum's face before cutting him with a knife "to see if he was alive," Moore said.

After destroying Baum's camp, the boys left the homeless man -- head wedged in his own grill -- under a piece of plastic where they hoped the "animals would eat" him.

Then, Moore says, they took off to grab a bite at McDonald's.

As a side note, I had a taco with a bum Sunday night. Dude asked for some change, and I asked if he wanted to come in and have a taco instead (I was on my way to the taco stand). He obliged, and we shared conversation about how he was a 'Nam vet, yada yada yada. Dunno if it was true, doesn't matter.

The wrote that homeless homicide is on the rise and elude to non-homeless people being the cause; but I wonder how many of those homicides were the result of other homeless people or a product of a murder/robbery.

This "news" article is little more than sensationalist fluff.

So it's "homeless homicide on the rise"? I'll infer that last year one (or perhaps none) of the homeless people were murdered by teens last year.

They're trying to create the connection between all 20 murders of homeless people last year to murders perpetrated by teenagers; when, according to the article, only two were killed in such a manner.

Don't misunderstand, killing a homeless person for no reason is horrific, to say the least; but blowing the issue out of proportion is just typical news sensationalism.

You'll notice that they never address who committed the other 18 murders.

I do work with the homeless at Christmas in the UK (only time of the year I feel guilty enough if I'm honest) and they all tend to be pretty good people. You wouldnt believe how quickly your life can disappear down the crapper if you dont see it coming! Homeless or not - no-one deserves that sort of a violent death (possibly with the exception of child rapists) just my view - anywho why do you guys dislike the mexicans so much?

I am always kind to homeless people...I've stopped and talked and drank beers with many, when I was under-age I would pay for their booze to go and buy my friends and I some booze then we would sit around with them and get drunk listening to their stories...

One of my friends works in a restauraunt down the street and has keys.We tell the homeless guys at night if they want to come over we'll make them some food and say we own it.When they get inside we disappear to the back to "make food"and slip out the back normaly breaking a window and call the police and say we saw someone breaking into that restaurant.It's so funny watching from across the street when the police arrive and haul them off and they are trying to convince the cops the owners let them in and went to the back
