I don't get the National Geographic channel. But for those who do, they are going to be doing a show (running tomorrow at 10pm eastern time I believe) on steroids featuring the head of the World Powerlifting Organization (WPO).

Just throwing it up there for anyone interested.

National Geographic: Steroids

It sounds interesting. I just watched the preview of it in the link you posted. Aren't steroids against the rules for competing in powerlifting?

hmmm...are they going to tell us how bad they are?

I actually think it is going to be more of a "neutral" show and talking about the benefits.....Like the one that HBO Real Sports aired....did you see that one? They had John Romano (of Muscular Development) on it. It was really good. You can get it on youtube,

I don't think anything is against the rules in the WPO.

The rules difer between organizations.

Strange. So is the WPO considered somewhat illegitimate in the world of powerlifting competitions and records?

That would be cool. I was going to add that I was surprised by the way the commerical ended; it almost made the special seem pro-steroid-use.

yes I have seen it, it was posted here a few times.

I'll be catching that for sure.

Thanks for the heads up.

The WPO is big time as far as records go. They are the ones that most of those guys put up the huge numbers in (the crazy 1000+ squats, the 100+bench presses and the near 1000lb deadlifts) because they allow you to wear all the crazy squat suits and bench shirts.

It is a really popular organization.

Shirts, suits, steroids........ why not powered exoskeletons?

For the discreet cheaters how about illegal genetic enhancements. The future is dark or bright depending how you look at it.

Muscle Gelz Transdermals
IronMag Labs Prohormones
just hit the record on my DVR so I don't miss it during the big game.

Pats 28 Giants 10

I don't get National Geographic .

Was it any good?

I am hoping someone puts in on youtube soon.

I thought it was relatively unbiased and included some solid scientific opinion....it was nor more biased than any other source IMHO.

I had recorded this and finally watched it, overall pretty decent, however I do not like how they linked steroids to heart disease in bodybuilders, I know it can definitely contribute but I think a bodybuilders diet should have been added as a variable, i.e. high protein, which could be a factor depending on the protein sources, which in many cases is a lot of beef. I also did not like the emphasis they put on that former Mr. Universe, obviously the guy was doing very high amounts of orals that caused his liver issues. Lastly, I did not like how they presented the case about the teenager that killed himself, they should have pointed out that he obviously did not use proper PCT, not to mention its an extremely isolated case, just like Lyle Alzado, which again there is no way of linking steroids to his health issues. I did like how they had two older MD's that were very objective about steroids and gave intelligent answers and feedback on them. But I think overall they made it clear that steroids are very misunderstood and there are much worse things out there.

My feelings as well.

and isn't interesting despite what the medical community said about steroids not meeting ANY criteria of a controlled substance this was ignored and in 1990 all anabolic steroids were classified as class III scheduled drugs, similar to the whole ephedra thing, huh?

it just irratates the hell out of me when I start thinking about this crap, how many people die EVERY year from the effects of alcohol and tobacco?

that isn't interesting it's infuriating. too many agencies with power in this country do shit that makes no sense at all. people know it's wrong it's blatantly wrong but it just stands because we are expected to be a nation of docile sheep and if anyone makes too much noise they are a radical  .

i watched this and i put a link to watch it online in the thread i posted the other day. it was really eye opening and informative.

As far as the show being biased there may not have been much they could do there. It's probably easier to find someone like Steve Michalik who is more than willing to tell of his own experience than it is to find an athlete in any sport to come right out and say "I do steroids without any problems."

maybe, but the "head of powerlifting" guy had no problems saying it.

True. But he also said that steroids are only for powerlifters and bodybuilders, not for Joe Average.

Who cares, the point is he admitted to using them, obviously pro athletes, i.e. NFL,MBA,etc., are not going to openly admit to their use as it will effect their pro career, but most pro bodybuilders will admit to it. They just don't like to go around talking about it because the DEA is already up all of their asses with a probe, the Bush administration has made steroids one of their number one priorities in their "war on drugs".

Here is how I feel about it: any healthy, adult male over 21 that would like to use anabolic steroids for whatever reason should be allowed to do so under a doctor's supervision, period.

At least now some of you know how I feel about how much of a pain in the ass the government is when I was smoking pot. Sadly, I also used the juice, so I am being fucked double time.
