Michael Phelps eats 12,000 calories a day me fucking ass...

he does more than just swim for training. read the magazine fitnessrx it has it in there. he cant just swim that much it will weaken bones or something, i'll have to go read it again. but they have an article on him. i didnt read the 12,000 calories a day though

Thanks Jodi, Min0.

I guess if I had to eat that many calories I'd have to eat something that tastes really good or else I'd barf after the 6000th calorie of boiled chicken and brown rice.....

So true...

One drunken night earlier this summer I went to Steak and Shake and got 2 Fresco Melts and a milkshake. The next day when I woke up, I checked out just how bad my meal was and each sandwich was over 1,000 calories and the milkshake was over 500 calories.

Knowing how easy it is to consume 2500 calories in such a short amount of time, I'm not 100% certain that Phelps doesn't eat 12,000 calories per day.

The fishy thing is, I would need about 2-3 hours to do any kind of exercise after eating such a gross/thick/greasy meal, while Phelps can eat twice as much as I did that night and be in the pool ten minutes later. It just doesn't add up.

^^ Considering he's been doing it for god knows how long now, I'm sure he's pretty accustomed to it. I've hit the 8K ballpark with fairly minimal effort in the past so I don't have a hard time believing Phelps can hit 12K. Burning 4k a workout he really has no choice.

cant be assed reading everyones posts, so sorry if somebody has already said this.

There was an interview with Phelps in the british FHM about 6 months ago, he said how he has to try and eat 10,000 calories a day, but normally falls way short of that mark, normally getting between 6000 - 8000 calories per day. confusion solved!

That's true.

The reason I felt like such dog shit after eating all that food was because I haven't had a meal like that in years. While at the beginning he may have felt similarly to how I felt, but after doing it daily for years, his body will obviously adapt. Good point.

Flopping around in the water takes tons of energy.....you should see what the surfers eat after they hit the waves out here.....I see them at Rainbows or Zippy's eating plate lunch specials like they were light snacks....we're talking 2 or 3 large portions of a fried meat like hamburger steak with an egg and gravy on it with a side of teriyaki steak on top of three ladles of rice and a ladle of macaroni salad made with an industrial size jar of mayo(thats so much mayo not one piece of pasta ever touches another because of the mayo buffer zone between them). They serve these foods in cardboard boxes and when they finish the grease has bled through the cardboard making it nearly transparent.......yet these guys are shredded to the bone.....

Yeah, I have a hard time believing 12K... 10K would likely be his upper limit. All day training would require a crap load of food I imagine.

side note:
To me decathaletes are the true "olympians".

Not to take anything away from Phelps but the world's fastest man carries more awe. Bolt is a true freak of nature. The guy is amazingly gifted.

Also, I'm really starting to hate judged events. Too bad all sports can't be determined by something as concrete as time (any race) or successful execution (ie: how much weight you lifted).

I agree he's definitely not the greatest athlete of all time, but there is no arguing the fact he is the most accomplished Olympian of all time. He's got 14 gold medals to prove it.

:roflmao:

Haha.. thats great.

I could see him eating on the north side of 10,000 calories just because if you take into the fact that he is probably slamming energy drinks (gatorade, vitamin water, etc) all day long to maintain the necessary energy to train with the sort of volume that he does.

I wonder if i did just one quarter of his training regimine how ripped I wud get?

a few things.. switch out half the water he probably drinks in a day for gatorade and soda.. holy crap thats a good chunk of calories.. decathaletes are the best olympians, hands down.

last but not least...

by the time the next summer games come around we will all say "michael phelps, shit i remember that name for some reason.." i love and hate the olympics, there is all this hype about all these atheletes, but then everyone stops givign a fuck two months after the olympics.. and i think i am one of the worst offenders :dont:
