One reaction to Obama win: soaring gun sales

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. â?????? When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?
That brought his mother, the camouflage-clad Rachel Smith, to Bob Moates Sports Shop on Thursday, where she was picking out that special 20-gauge shotgun â?????? one of at least five weapons she plans to buy before Obama takes office in January.
Like Smith, gun enthusiasts nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.
"I think they're going to really try to crack down on guns and make it harder for people to try to purchase them," said Smith, 32, who taught all five of her children â?????? ages 4 to 10 â?????? to shoot because the family relies on game for food.
Last month, as an Obama win looked increasingly inevitable, there were more than 108,000 more background checks for gun purchases than in October 2007, a 15 percent increase. And they were up about 8 percent for the year as of Oct. 26, according to the FBI.
No data was available for gun purchases this week, but gun shops from suburban Virginia to the Rockies report record sales since Tuesday's election.
"They're scared to death of losing their rights," said David Hancock, manager of Bob Moates, where sales have nearly doubled in the past week and are up 15 percent for the year. On Election Day, salespeople were called in on their day off because of the crowd.
Obama has said he respects Americans' Second Amendment right to bear arms, but that he favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault and concealed weapons.
As a U.S. Senator, Obama voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to lawsuits; and as an Illinois state legislator, he supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on all firearms.
During an October appearance in Ohio, Obama sought to reassure gun owners. "I will not take your shotgun away," he said. "I will not take your rifle away. I won't take your handgun away."
Gun advocates take some solace in the current makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 this summer to strike down the District of Columbia's 32-year ban on handguns. For now, gun rights supporters hold a narrow edge on the court, but Obama could appoint justices who would swing it the other way.
Franklin Gun Shop outside Nashville, Tenn., sold more than 70 guns on Tuesday, making it the biggest sales day since the shop opened eight years ago. Guns & Gear in Cheyenne, Wyo., also set a one-day sales record on Tuesday, only to break that mark on Wednesday.
Stewart Wallin, owner of Get Some Guns in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray, Utah, said he sold nine assault weapons the day after Obama was elected. That same day, the gun store Cheaper Than Dirt! in Fort Worth, Texas, sold $101,000 worth of merchandise, shattering its single-day sales record, store owner DeWayne Irwin said.
One Georgia gun shop advertised an "Obama sale" on an outdoor sign, but the owner took it down after people complained that the shop appeared to be issuing a call to violence against the country's first black leader.
The president of a Montana gun manufacturer stepped down last month after word that he supported Obama led to calls for a boycott of the company.
While Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, attributes some of the sales boom to the tanking economy, he thinks the Democratic sweep is the top reason why guns are suddenly a hot commodity.
"I don't think he'll be able to stand up to that anti-Second Amendment wing of the Democratic party that's just been spoiling for chance to ban America's guns," LaPierre said of Obama.
During the campaign, the NRA warned that Obama would be the "most antigun president in American history." And while Vice President-elect Joe Biden owns shotguns, he has supported a ban on assault weapons and has said private sellers at gun shows should be required to perform background checks.
But Mark Tushnet, a Harvard Law School professor who has written a book about the gun debate, said new firearms regulations will be a low priority for an Obama administration and Democratic Congress facing a global economic crisis and two wars.
"Maybe the gun-show loophole will be closed, but not much else," he said in an e-mail. "I'd be surprised, for example, if Congress enacted a new assault gun ban."
Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said his organization will continue to press for what he calls "sensible" restrictions â?????? background checks at gun shows, a ban on military-style assault weapons and cracking down on illegal gun trade. He believes he has the backing of the new administration on those issues, but any fears of a broader crackdown are unfounded.
"The one thing that they agree strongly with us on is that it's too easy for dangerous people to get guns in this country," Helmke said. "I guess if you're a dangerous person you might want to run out there and buy some more, but otherwise you should be OK."

Paul Helmke is a lying piece of shit.

I love how they continue to push for the assault weapons ban, which make up for less than 1% of violent crimes that involve guns.

They have this cute little magical idea that if you ban something, it disappears and criminals obey the law.

What I see as a possibility, another AWB, maybe some bolder attempts, we'll see...

I agree with both of you and it has to be a concern for a gun owner. To take guns away from the American people will be close to impossible to do in 4 years but to place rediculous taxes and restrictions on owners can make them harder to obtain. Over time sales plummit and fewer are produced. Then fewer. Then fewer. And ,,,well you get the point. One has to assume there are bigger problems at hand right now than firearms for the United States Government but how many times have they done things that made no sense to the amerian public before. On semi automatic weapons, to ban them is absurd. I have an SKS and use it lawfully so why should I not be allowed to have one? I return with the same argument that always stands true in this debate, honest people will have to give up their firearms and criminals are fn criminals and they'll still have them.

um. it's hunting season. :nerd:

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. â?????? When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?

A very predictable response. Personally, I think he will have his hands full with much larger problems for at least the next few years before he puts any efforts in gun control, but I think the upswing in sales was as much a personal statement by some as it was a response to knowing an anti freedom/anti liberty pres will be in the White House.

I'm not rushing to the gun store myself, but will keep a sharp eye on the bills, etc that come down the pike.

Paul Helmke is a lying piece of shit.

Wow, what a sack O crap. :loser:

Passing gun laws turns people who would otherwise be murderous criminals into law abiding citizens. This logic is flawless. I mean, when you're going to go commit a felony, you're really concerned about if your gun was legally acquired, right?

I'm not happy about Obama being elected president, but I don't that's an appropriate sentiment.

no. it's really hunting season.

This is Maine. My mom actually works at a place that rents cabins to hunters and takes them on guided hunting trips. Tess had deer meat the other day.

Hopefully nothing bad will happen to our president. A lot of people predict it will and it makes me feel disgusted. I hope all plots are found out, the lowlifes doled out the appropriate sentences, which i think is death, and he lives to a ripe old age. Unlike these poor tasty deer.

i knew it was cuz you know me but you never know who might need that clarified. it's kinda a bad thing for some newbie to get the wrong idea about

and i really hope to hell people aren't buying automatic weapons to shoot deer.

Are you concerned for the animals that a statement like that might offend??

Your racism meter is still on the fritz, huh. :D

Overreaction, he won't do shit.

I have all the wapons I need, now its just time to start stockpiling the ammo.

I have nine long guns and a pistol. I'm set for the rest of my life. One of my rifles was passed down to me 3 generations. I will not, under any circumstances, give that gun away.

Obama knows he's already left a sour enough taste in so many rednecks mouths he wouldn't risk making them any angrier.....

LMAO, I will remind you of that in a few months when new bills come up to be voted on.

People don't seem to understand how politics works. The Dems and anti gun groups have had their nose bloodied for years now and they are hankering to change that. If a bill lands on Obama's desk pushed hard by his party, backed by anti gun groups, what's he gonna do? He's gonna sign it, that's what he's gonna do. So, he does not need to personally be drumming up anti gun laws to directly effect the issue, and that's exactly how it's going to play out. As he's yet to see a gun law he didn't like, there's no reason to think he will be resistant to pretty much any ban that comes his way via Congress and lobby groups who:

â???¢Don't know anything about guns
â???¢Ignore the data on guns
â???¢Ignore history
â???¢Ignore the Const on guns
â???¢Don't let the facts get in their way of the laws they attempt to pass regarding guns

People have every right to be worried, thus why the big spike in gun sales, which will be followed by a big spike in membership and $$$ going to the various pro 2A groups.

got a closet full of things lol. not to worried only thing that would piss me off is if they tried to take em. that and if i cant get that walther or 1911 i am eyeballing.

It's distressing to me to see a trend in threads like this that seem to start with "I got" and end with "so I am not worried." It's not about you and what you got, or me and what I got. It's larger than you and I, and that attitude is what gets us into trouble in the first place. It's about the Const., Human Rights, defending the rights of others, that may or may not directly apply to you at this moment, etc. Look at the larger picture and stop focusing on yourself for a minute.

It should "piss you off" that an old man who runs a small store can't protect his life's work and his family, or the women who can't get a gun with stalker following her, etc, etc.

Non-Issue.

How stupid.

i was refering more to the point of ffl check at gun shows etc. odds of taking guns out of the legit us gun holders is slim to none. has nothing to do with being short sited. i would be outraged if they tried to do remove guns from the law abiding citizens of this nation. as for assault weapons define that point. a semi auto ar-15 why should you have one. a full auto any thing why do you need one. i can understand stiffer control there. to many dipshits that shouldnt have access to some thing that can mow a man down. gun control will always be a contraversal issue. but honestly go to some of the gun shows and really look around. man some of these little punks buying guns look like they have no business buying a gun. if you have no mental illness or any violent thing to stop you from getting a gun i say go for it. what i dont ever want to see is some f*%^ing rapist be able to walk into the local gun store and buy a gun. touchy subject granted but i am a father. i have to look at both damn sides, and the people i care about.

To the above I can only repeat, those actively looking to pass gun control laws:

•Don't know anything about guns
•Ignore the data on guns
•Ignore history
•Ignore the Const on guns
•Don't let the facts get in their way of the laws they attempt to pass regarding guns that have no effects on actual crime rates and/or increase crime rates.

Guess what, they may look at what you have and tell you what you "need" and you may end up in that group ho does not "look" like he should have a gun...

true and fair enough. not to worried becouse i am a law abiding citizen, i dont have any thing that prevents me from purchasing, or owning a firearm. also if a law were to pass that would take my firearms. well looks like my house got broken into and i dont have any more guns. oh and my priceless monet painting got stolen as well hehehe.

on a more serious note though i am going to keep watching to see what happens. all any one can do until some thing comes up is wait. if you have a petition to prevent em hell send it my way. only thing i can truly agree with is stricter control on open dealing. i mean around here you can buy a gun out of the paper. no id not ffl check nothing. just hey buddy got that sig for sale still and your good to go. oh and i just picked up some spear gold dots looking forward to shooting some targets with those.

Because it is in the constitution that we have the right to own one. Doesn't matter if I NEED one or not. I want them and have a right to own one and that should not be infringed upon.
I cannot understand stiffer control on this or anything and thoughts like yours will get everything banned. Once they get a foot in, they will not stop at assault rifles, they want everything you have. And if you don't think so, you are truely misinformed.
