He can't do everything wrong: Obama is giving a loan guarantee to build the first nuclear reactor in the US in 30 years.

Original Article.

So, to all of those who bitch about using nuclear energy: Suck it!

I like to think this is the first step in getting away from oil.

now if we could just speed the process along. it takes 10 years to build one of these bad boys. we need to get started!

Good, now DOMS, backing Obama.

Anyway, cheers.

Maybe there will be some Nuke jobs like the one Karen Silkwood, had.

Or that other incident....Erin Brockavich? Yeah, that was the one. :hiya:

Bout time he did something right. This is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, the NIMBY (not in my back yard) pussies and the enviro-nazis won't hold this up for years and years.

Now, if he could just figure out how to convert hope and change, and some of those other empty platitudes into energy, we might make some progress.

neither of these two ladies worked at nuclear power plants. or maybe you are anti-energy now? would you have us go back to pre-industrial revolution times?

What do you mean first step? Bush supported Solar, wind, etc. and Obama has continued the support with more enthusiasm. I am glad he has opened up one more avenue for energy independence but we have been blazing this trail for several years....

But I though Silkwood worked at a nuke plant? No?

She worked at the Kerr-McGee plant in OK making plutonium pellets for rods.

It's the first real step. In terms of energy produced to amount of land used, this is the absolute best option for an alternative energy source to oil. A damn might be comparable, but it has a very bad effect on the environment compared to a nuclear plant.

I don't know, sucking all that water in and sending it back out upsets nature a little bit, silent motionless solar panels just sit out and collect photons all day like leaves on a tree, and there is so much empty roof space you really don't have to use any land at all, those 'Solar Farms' you see are not what the industry has in mind for a solar future most of us loathe the commercial industries that do that.....now let me get back to this quote for 450 solar modules on this Storage facility...

Nice pitch.:D

I have an even better idea. How about we get every adult in the US and make them take IQ and common sense. Those that fail get placed on giant hamster wheels and service those of us who passed?

On a non-joking note: what is the rate of energy production per acre for solar panels?

Doesn't matter cause there is more than enough empty roof space baking under the Sun....

They have a game console where kids have to pedal an exercise bike to store up energy to play on it....they should hook tv's and computers up to these for adults....every little bit of energy conservation helps....

also this Nuke facility probably won't take any of the coal powered plants offline it'll probably only help boost the weak power grid....

I am surprised you fiscal conservatives are even backing this....

There are two going into production. That'll bring the total up to 26 reactors. I hoping these are only the start.

If there are enough, and energy gets cheap enough, then you'll see more electric vehicles and the demand for gas in the US will drop.

With Nuclear Power the man still owns the grid and rapes your ass for using the power, with Solar Power after you pay it off, it's yours and after a period of time, like here in Hawaii 8years typically, you have free power for the next 20+ years.....now that's energy independence

So, just by covering your roof with solar panels, you'd generate enough power for the entire house? What's the failure rate on the panels? What happens if it's cloudy for weeks on end?

My house yes, cloudy times I am still tapped into the grid, sun comes back I produce enough power to offset my daytime and night time energy uses the grid is just a cloudy day safety net. Solar prices have gone day almost 50% since I started 7 years ago.....the modules are guaranteed 25years, but will likely last 35 or 40, we have one in our museum collection from the mid-70's that still works and back then they didn't have the UV resistant materials we have today so the glass has brown, the silicon has discolored but it still works.......

Good then! There's no reason that both can't been done. Just imagine if every state had at least one, and in the case of Texas, 10 or so; plus having solar panels on all of the houses.

Another solar panel question: does an entire city covered in glass/mirrors pose a threat to aircraft in the form of reflected light?

test run on haiti....

That's the beauty of the industry, at some point someone realized that reflected light is lost efficiency so they use anti-reflective glass....

Actually, Karen Silkwood worked in a plant making the fuel for the reactors, so he was right about that one.

I remember that story, I had to write a paper on that once in one of my ethics classes. If you can cut through the bullshit, it looked like she may have been sneaking radioactive materials out of the plant to taint her contamination test. When they tested her at some government facility, I can;t remember which, her test showed much less radioactive contamination than the test she took at home.

It looks obvious that she was dishonest about her claims to the severity of the workers contamination, but it is also obvious that someone hired a hit on her to shut her the fuck up.

Now you know better than that. :paddle:

Oh, something like 2,250,000 miles per acre.....now get back on that wheel.... and run faster, beeeotch.:D

:funny:
