Religions are the perfect mechanism for getting otherwise compassionate people to behave despicably as a group. This is partly because the basic faith-premises are not really disputable in ordinary, human, common worldly terms. Which is why as an athiest I really don't have much against personal religion, it's just the organized part that sucks.
For the record, athiesm is just the simple decision not to believe in a supernatural being or beings. Simple, nothing more, nothing less. It's no less or more than rejecting tarot card reading or voodoo magic. In fact, you can still be religious in the sense that some athiests belong to the "high" religions like some sects of buddism such as taoism that do not require a supernatural being.
