Two reason:
1. We are the the first-world with the highest population of third-world people. Just check the prison population by race.
2. Unlike many other countries (such as China), we don't kill nearly enough prisoners.
For example, we have a lot of people in prison on drug charges, but in Singapore, being a drug dealer gets you the death penalty.

the US also has the highest rate of low paid workers in the OECD and the worlds only for profit prison system...surely no correlation there

the supply started in the 80's when the unions were busted of which the highest percentage of union members are blacks. it's also the same time when US prisons began to be privatized with funding by wallstreet investors (Lehman Brothers, BoA, etc.) and other large US firms like IBM, Boeing, AT&T, Honeywell, Macy's, Target and many others.
and what do these prison produce, 100% of all military helmets, ammunition belts, bullet-proof vests, ID tags, shirts, pants, tents, bags, and canteens. Along with war supplies, prison workers supply 98% of the entire market for equipment assembly services; 93% of paints and paintbrushes; 92% of stove assembly; 46% of body armor; 36% of home appliances; 30% of headphones/microphones/speakers; and 21% of office furniture.
all part of the great Reagan revolution...not a fucking good thing has come out of conservative politicians in the US in over 40 years. finding out why things occur in the US and not in other country's is so freaking easy all you have to do is follow the money trails.

Real answer? Fact is that the US has a FOR PROFIT prison system and those making money running prisons are bribing errr I mean donating to congress election funds. Once it went "for profit" the laws started changing to put a mandatory prison time on almost any crime. So now you can even go to jail for jaywalking.
