Arizona has ruled that ethnic studies are against the state constitution.

God, I love Arizona! They're setting the precedent that'll help the country.

Tucson's Mexican American studies program violates state law, an Arizona administrative law judge ruled Tuesday, paving the way for the program's possible demise.

Judge Lewis D. Kowal affirmed a prior decision by the state's schools chief that the Tucson Unified School District's program violates a new law prohibiting divisive ethnic-studies classes.

John Huppenthal, the state superintendent of public instruction, had deemed the program in violation in June. Among other things, the law bans classes primarily designed for a particular ethnic group or that "promote resentment toward a race or class of people."

I like that quote. I usually find myself disliking a person when they rub me off at first impression.
Sometimes I get to know the person a little better and I find that there is a reason to excuse that persons reason for me not liking his behaviour.
But for some people there is no hope.

That would be fine if it was taken as getting to know the man, without regard for race, religion, nationality, etc.

Arizona is getting this right in trying to eliminate these barriers instead of promoting them. Only then will you be able to get to know the MAN.

Like I've said before great/influential/historic people can stand against the world they don't need a special subsection to get recognition and in fact doing so is a disservice to their greatness/influence. We don't have British-American Studies to learn about our Founding Fathers.

Since your post is vague, and guessing your intent from previous posts, I must say, "Fuck you."

I don't hate Mexicans because they've done some minor thing that's annoyed me. They're invading my country and destroying the first-world nature of everything they touch.

And in closing: go choke on a dick.

Exactly!

What about american indians as a part of ethnic studies? Your government and constitution is unique compared to Europeans because benjamin franklin looked to the iroquois league as a example of living breathing representative democracy . Iroquois ideas of the natural rights of mankind etc. had a profound effect on your democratic institutions.American indians had ideas of lliberty, fraternity and equality long before locke, more etc. over in europe. After the war of 1812 the americans forgot their cultural syncretism with the indians and how much they contributed. By the way,I didn't learn the above in your disneyfied version of american history during my AP class in american highschool.( it was pathetic by the way but I did score a 5). I learned the above in Taiwan...

and why the hell is that americans only know george washington carver as the only black inventor, the electrical resistors, xray spectrometry, gas mask, traffic signal , a type of surgical cataract cure etc. were all invented by blacks. If you don't want ethnic studies say for blacks teach the fact that there is more than one black inventor for gods sake. If you don't want blacks to look at rap artists as role models why don't you teach them about their counterparts that actually went and accomplished something useful? Same goes for us women, the kevelar used in bullet proof vests and airplanes and cars was invented by a woman chemist but no-one hears of female inventors. I had to learn all that in our ethnic studies relating to science in college. It was such a relief to know there were tons of women in my field ( chemistry) who had invented and pattened a lot, so it wasn't like I would have to forge ahead and break new ground, they had already done it for me.

Why? Why do ANY of these things have to be looked at through the prism of race, religion, nationality or anything else? If the country would follow Arizona's lead, maybe we could finally put this bullshit behind us and start evaluating people based on their merits rather than their skin color.

Wow, nice way to misrepresent and overplay something. All he did was use them as an example of an idea he already had.

It's so clear that were a major influence on him...

t would be a strange thing if Six Nations of ignorant savages should be capable of forming a scheme for such an union, and be able to execute it in such a manner as that it has subsisted ages and appears indissoluble; and yet that a like union should be impracticable for ten or a dozen English colonies, to whom it is more necessary and must be more advantageous, and who cannot be supposed to want an equal understanding of their interests.

I picked out one item in that list (I'm watching a video about mining in Australia): the gas mask.

Source.

The history of protective respiratory equipment can be traced back as far as the 16th century, when Leonardo da Vinci suggested that a finely woven cloth dipped in water could protect sailors from a toxic weapon made of powder that he had designed. Alexander von Humboldt introduced a primitive respirator in 1799 when he was working in Prussia as a mining engineer.

...

The first US patent for an air purifying respirator was granted to Lewis P. Haslett in 1848 for his 'Haslett's Lung Protector,' which filtered dust from the air using one-way clapper valves and a filter made of moistened wool or a similar porous substance.

...
Inventors were also developing air purifying devices in Europe. John Stenhouse, a Scottish chemist
None of those guys are black, but I'm sure they're all lies because Wikipeida is racist.

The guy your referring to merely invented a different type of gas mask. But yeah, that should be at the top of the list of inventions.

And the electrical resistor was created by George Ohm. You know, the name of the unit of electrical resistance called the...wait for it...ohm.

If you don't want ethnic studies say for blacks teach the fact that there is more than one black inventor for gods sake. Same goes for us women

So we shouldn't mention inventions or discoveries by how they effected society, but by making a top ten of inventions by race and gender?

Right...

Just because you don't like the fact that the vast majority of inventions and discoveries were by men, and that most of the modern inventions of the 19th and 20th centuries were by white men, doesn't erase the reality of it.

And show me a class for Caucasian studies in any high school, college or university. You can't. Why? Because that would be racist. In other words, you have a type of class that's allowed to one race but not another. You know what that is? Racism.

Because they are taught in Special Studies classifications instead of along with other inventors. If there weren't sub-sections of human history they could be taught right along side the Edison's , Bells etc taught in regular classes. When you divide them into sections you make them appear inferior to their white counterparts and I find fault in that....

of course but the problem it isnt taught, and i like how someone nitpicked over the gas mask but breezed over the other inventions by blacks...., but why is that only washington carver is mentioned?
its sad that women's inventions and accomplishments have to be taught in ethnic or minority studies, it should be taught right up there with the other guys.

to be specific then george alcorn xray spectrometer ( not from wikpedia)
patricia bath cataract removal ( in any medical journal)
otis boykin patented 1959 electrical resistor that allowed precise amount of electricity to flow through it ( just google him) this revolutionized modern resistors

No, my question is do we label them ethnic minorities, which they are, and don't teach a class on them? They are the ultimate minorities by sheer numbers.

Otis boykin, father of the modern resistor, look him up, not in wikpedia. Ohm is technically the ulitmate founder , fair enough, your right on that one but I'm talking about the cell phone compared to the telegraph by scale.

The guy your referring to merely invented a different type of gas mask. But yeah, that should be at the top of the list of inventions.

I threw him in since I did see a show on that too, different one.

Actually, there is, it's the version of the civil war taught by the southern apologists here in the south where they conveniently forgot that the fight to enforce state rights over federal powers was hugely for the sole benefit of a form of commerce and economy that relied exclusively on slavery, black, indians, alike.

I agree that there is no reason why the accomplishment/inventions of women and blacks shouldn't be included in the corriculum of a regular American History class. I'm certain that it could all be covered in less than a one-hour session.

what a quote that said if these savages can make a union work why can't we?

Of course ben franklin still thought them savages, no less than Lincoln was most likely racist but the main fact is that the iroquois league was your founding fathers' proof that such a represenative democracy could be stable and exist and that this was lacking anywhere else in the world, a world run by Kings ( or emprorers in my neck of the woods.) Thank god you guys had something to hang your hat on or else you would turned out more like a constitutional monarchy. I can't get the original from the Yale archives for some reason but I think the historians who read it seem to not deny its affect on our constintution. It's strange that my taiwanese history teacher creditted this unique form of democracy to the philosophers of the west ( locke etc.) but also equally attributed it to the aborigines, the american indians. Probably, because we taiwanese are also aborigines, luckily , we didnlt get wiped out by the moon faced hans....

Problem is if it isn't asked on the state/federally mandated tests, it isn't taught, especially in a right to work state like Arizona. We have managed to create a situation in the U.S. where any kind of innovation or creativity is frowned upon in secondary public schools. Respect to anyone who is still teaching in this country in the current public school system. I did it for ten years as a H.S. English teacher, and I just can't do it anymore.
I decided to go back to school and get a second Masters as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I truly loved teaching, but the current political situation made it impossible for me to do my job. Curriculum was being handed down from administrators who had no training whatsoever in the specific subjects. Their only concern was improving overall test scores. By the way, I taught for two years in a border school in Arizona.

luckily in medical school we don't teach to the test or I would quit as well.

I'm afraid that america, the home of innovativeness is going to fall behind as china and India quickly adapt their teaching methods to encompass the best of the west and still keep their rigors in place. the teacher has a lot of power, more so than administrators. Not so in America. Of course, all creativity and no academic rigorness isn't good either , no point in directing a chemical plant if your chemists can't master the multivariable calculus needed to produce enzymatic exothermic reactions using highly unstable reagents to produce the reaction safely on a large scale basis.......
america leads the way in patents but it is on the backs of foreign educated scientists who come here for the intellectual freedom and civil rights... so don't be too hard on all immigrants, these immigrants need to be handed the red carpet ( at emory the interventional cardiologists that lead the way in designing unique patents on vascular intervention are comprised mostly those from latin america.., India and Egypt of all places......)

I

In the Six Nations you were born into a position of leadership by heredity.
And old Ben didn't follow it very close since it was the women who held real power and chose who from the hereditary lines would take the sachem post and could also take it away....

Nah I think it was probably Greek and Roman history that paved the largest path but that's just a wild guess....

of course but the problem it isnt taught, and i like how someone nitpicked over the gas mask but breezed over the other inventions by blacks...., but why is that only washington carver is mentioned?

Someone? The name is DOMS.

I picked the gas mask for the reason that I stated. The second one (the resistor) is basic knowledge that I learned in a science class in grade school.

You know why the rest of that stuff isn't mentioned? Because in a general class about science, it doesn't matter. Who invented the electric stop light? We didn't even cover the evolution of the stop sign. We did cover who discovered electricity and who harnessed it to do work. You know, the important shit. The same goes for almost all of the stuff you listed.

The only one that really is a big deal is the X-Ray Spectrometer. That's the only one that isn't just an upgrade to, or re-purposing of, an existing technology.

Here's a page with the top 10 black inventors. Only two items that are like that. One is the x-ray spectrometer and the other is the control unit for a pacemaker (this barely qualifies in the technical sense).

Should they mention the person that created a resister that only lets in a specific amount of electricity? Then shouldn't we mention all other types of resistors? Of course not. Then why should we mention that specific one? Because it was created by a black man? So it's only important because he's black? That isn't racist at all.

Who cares who invented a the process of attaching a shoe top to the sole in one minute during manufacturing? Hell, we'll put that right into the Shoe 101 class.

No, my question is do we label them ethnic minorities, which they are, and don't teach a class on them? They are the ultimate minorities by sheer numbers.

Because the race of the inventor/discover doesn't matter. Only the effect or originality does.

As for whites being the minority, it's odd that the vast major of inventions/discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries were by whites. But science is racist like that. Hell, the vast majority of major scientific discoveries in the 2000s are by whites.

Otis boykin, father of the modern resistor, look him up, not in wikpedia. Ohm is technically the ulitmate founder , fair enough, your right on that one but I'm talking about the cell phone compared to the telegraph by scale.

Stop the bullshit. Ohm is the one that created the actual technology, not Boykin.

Ohm lived from 1789 to 1854.
Boykin lived from 1920 to 1982.

You'd think that a hundred and thirty years later that someone would advance the technology.

This is the same bullshit that happened to textbooks in the 90s. Overplaying the roles of minorities and downplaying the roles of whites. Just to make minorities feel better about themselves.

You don't want these inventions taught in school because of their own merits, you want them taught because of the color of the skin of the inventor.

Not racist at all...

I would think the the original inventor of the technology would be more significant than someone who figured out how to augment it later. But, didn't Michael Jordan invent the free-throw line slam dunk? There's an important invention from a colored.

No question about the bright students from other countries. Some of the most gifted people in my strand at a prestigious west coast MFT program were educated outside the U.S. There are only about 30 of us, and I'd say almost half were not educated in the U.S. The level of diversity in the program is remarkable, considering there are so few of us. I was very fortunate to gain admission and a scholarship on the back of my teaching experience and previous academic performance. I do, on occasion, look around the room and consider the very real possibility that I may be the dumbest person in the room...

Forget otis, and the hell with accolades for bill gates who also revolutionaized the computer, the SOB didn't invent it. the more worrisome big picture is ....how can teaching ethnic studies of latinos be any different than teaching american indian studies, jewish history, women studies and other traditionally minority concentrated studies in this ruling? Isn't the genocidal history against indians and jews also going to promote hatred and divisiveness ( against the majority)? You may not like the topic at hand but as a student if I want to study jewish contributions to science and lilterature etc. or latino contributions why not? Doesn't it strike fear in americans that the freedom to include a curriculum,no matter how offensive ( like the crappy glossed over confederacy classes down south) is now being regulated by a government body much like other less free societies?

You are missing the big picture. The law will do away with all of the "ethnic" studies, not just the Latino one.

Topics such as the slaughter of Indians and the Jews during WW2 aren't the focus of an entire class. They're covered in American history and world cultures respectively. Where they should be taught.

They also teach about blacks like Martin Luther King Jr. because his shit is actually relevant to American history. The topics covered are done so because they're relevant, not because of ethnicity or gender.

Freedom to include curriculum? How about the freedom to include intelligent design? Hell no. Religious teachings should never be the focus in any public school.

Padding out the school curriculum just to make a group of people feel better about themselves is bullshit.

They cover the Confederacy in the south because it happens to have been a major point in their local history. Just like my kids were taught about the local state history. Again, it's called "relevance."

You want a class covering all things Latino, take your ass down to Mexico.

Lastly, and you've completely ignored this so far: show me a Caucasian studies class. A class where it only covers all things white. You can't, because that would be called "racist" and destroyed. One race can have something and another can't? That's racism.

No malcom X in my history book mofo!!!!! :hmmm:

Malcom X is there too. But he was nothing more than a thug with a good vocabulary, so he only gets a paragraph.

yup, the man who tells minorities to fight back gets a paragraph. The man who says to turn the other cheek and protest peacefully gets a holiday.
I understand :winkfinger:
