Overcoming slumps and burnout periods...

We all get to that point where we've been working at a goal for so long and pushing our bodies for so long, that we get burnt out. The grind of meal prep, and finding time to get in all your meals during the day....along with putting in 110% in all your workouts no matter how tired you are from work. I can honestly say myself that I've had the bodybuilding blues a few times. Just dragging myself to the gym, with total lack of energy and motivation, slacking on my diet, slacking on cardio, skipping a workout, etc...The slumps can last for days, weeks, or even months...


You should always have a goal in mind....but how long can you really work towards that goal before you need a break?


What do you do to get back into it and get yourself motivated? How do you get all the cylinders firing again?


New routine?
New diet?
More gear?
Less gear?
Take a week or 2 off training?




Let's hear your strategies....it may just help out others who read this as well :)

I will usually take a break for a week. What has really worked for me is bouncing between a few gyms, breaks the monotomy.

Not sure if this applies, since bodybuilding isn't my primary goal (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is). When I am struggling and not rolling well, I just keep showing up first off. I never take days off unless forced to by injury or catastrophe. Usually I will try to change things up by playing different guards (akin perhaps to switching exercises like standard deadlift to sumo to RDL), or trying to play top and pass more instead of playing guard and sweeping (not sure how to relate this, closest thing might be switching to a powerlifting or gymnastics routine for a while?).
 
I take a week or so off every few mths does wonders for me but I have been a iron head 22 years now so it's like a second job at this point
 
Yea sometimes you need to just take a break active recovery stretching mobility work and massage.
 
I haven't had any motivation as of recent. I have not been to gym in weeks. I have been busy as fuck but no excuse. When I started working out I trained with couple buddies and it was nice they taught me everything. It got to the point that it was just a hassle. so started training by myself. Now starting tomorrow my cousin is joining gym and wants to train with me. Seem like that's the only motivation I needed. I'm excited to get back in gym after couple week brake and help someone out like I've been helped. I'll let you know how it works out bud.

even after 20 to 25 years in the game I still struggle being burned out all the time and am all ways wondering if I am doing to much not enough.do I need more off days or do I need more on days am I over training or am I under training etc ?
 
It helps that I do my workouts first thing in the morning. I'm a lark, so all my energy comes early. By 9 pm I'm looking for the rack. That I think has helped me to stay focused. The downside is by 6 pm, I'm wanting to snack but all my macros are done, so I fight it. Having two skinny women in the house that can eat what ever they want and not gain an oz doesn't help, especially when they do it right in front of me. So for me, training blues have never been a problem, it's avoiding the snack attack. keeping busy at night is the best defense.

I wish I could do my workouts early. Don't get me wrong I do but rather evening. Makes me feel tired and drained rest of day
