at what age do you think someone is an adult, and why..


drivers license, military service, ability to vote, age of alcohol consumption, age to buy cigarettes....



the age of human brain maturity is around 25 (give or take)
the criminal justice system has prosecuted children as young as 12 as an adult in the US


the drivers license age varies a little from state to state- age for marriage varies wildly with some contingencies...


I kinda hate this topic because my tendency is to say- go with science but it isn't realistic practical or based on much beyond current brain research - which is ever changing and clearly droves of adults has survived at a much younger age as adults just fine.

I have to write a pro and con paper...I have an outline but it sucks

... you're leaving me wide open for abuse from X GI's.... ok , no hating please ?!?!? to go to war I'd prefer a man be at least 30, as it's always old [white] men that send young men off to defend & die for country... not good IMO... I wish young men had more time to find out who they are & that's not who they thought they were when they are in their 20's... wealthy men rarely serve in 'war zones' if at all... fix this once and for all ... in my hood many guys went to serve just to get out of the house, they were trying to be adults & thought that would do it,,[another lesson learned]... How many of us have kids in their 20's then realize that nothing is working like they thought it would , & need a do-over..

... people will hate this, but I don't agree with capital punishment ....and for sure, 'mitigating circumstances' should be factored in.... although many will disagree with that also..this will sound corny, but I always felt that there could be an error in their case... [this is the part people seem to hate] ..' if one man dies unjustly, it's one man to many'... so no death penalty...

No I agree with the problem with capital punishment . I think in clear cut ..multiple witness....unsullied testimony and confession than its warranted ..
Many mistakes have been made where there was later exoneration...I think this is tragic.

But in the cases of children, one 12 yr old case comes to mind. He killed his father with a shotgun while the father was sleeping. .there was inconclusive evidence of sexual and physical abuse. The kid was tried and convicted as an adult to life in prison. I'm not sure how I feel about it ...my bleeding g heart says one thing..my brain says...I'm not sure I'd want the kid living next door to me (not my backyard mentality)
Then there's the case of the 8 year old boy who beat his 6 yr old Neighbor to death because she wouldn't let him see her new puppy. What then?

are you asking mental maturity or sexual maturity. medically speaking sexual maturity may mean being able to breed, but mental maturity is definitely on-going process where you start at like 16 and think your mature enough to make adult decisions and every several years you look back and realize you didnt know shit. until your old enough to think back and feel not only did I not know shit then but I still dont know shit, and its at that moment your a cognitive adult

Would you still feel the same way about molesters that rape and kill children. I feel some people are pure evil and don't deserve to be in this world.

Fucking old school raising kids works. They need to be resilient and self-sufficient to survive.

Our 9 year olds have been told at 18 they're out the door.

They have full house hold duties which they need to do for screen time, and extra jobs to earn cash.

If there is something they really want we will make them earn a portion of it and chip in the rest.

It is hard for them when their mates get everything they want on a plate, but they do observe how rude and disrespectful some of these little bastards are, without prompt from us, which is pleasing.

there was some interesting topics to draw from in the paper including pre ww2 attitude (high risk taking from teens to young adults-weirdly more dating and promiscuity) to the 50's- better economy way more leisure time- kids less interested in looking to get a job and raise a family out of the gate (steady dating was a change but pardoxically later marriage)
kids in the 90's- latch key kids but more trouble because viewed as more mature

current brain research that the human brain doesn't complete development until roughly 27/28 for men, 24/25 for women- more drive in millennials (srsly) but a way shittier economy putting them in an odd position
liesure time for americans is at an all time low statistically

it was neat but I just couldn't get behind the direction it was being led because Im not a teenager and frankly had my own apartment at 16
it didn't do me any favors in life

my kids have impeccable manners - we're complimented on it a lot.
the oldest works 2 jobs and goes to college- she borrowed a whopping 300 bucks from me for this semester to buy text books she was short on.

second oldest has some learning disabilities but they're well managed- does not work because I want her to focus on school but helps with the little kids, does chores and is planning her route to college next fall



I've handed all of my kids almost anything they've ever wanted- I'll see how it turns out in the end but I think engaged parenting without being a helicopter parent sheltering kids from every bad thing has worked out well

.. many men think they are raising their boys to be men by instilling their own macho beliefs , they think that doing the 'tough guy act' will forge the type man who will be polite, & work hard... it may breed in resentments that the 'macho dad' didn't realize would happen because these deep resentments won't manifest it's self till much later in life.. one problem is that these particular men aren't really in touch with their sons like they think they are, & when proven wrong could never admit that they were wrong not the boy....

I'm raising my kids to respect authority, and elders. My son holds the door for women and elders. But I take him to MMA so he doesnt fear others. I did a lot of dumb shit as a teen to be cool, I think having self confidence and knowing you dont have to give into peer pressure to fit in is something I wish I learned early. When I used to volunteer at a homeless shelter seemed like all the kids were resigned to the fact they were never going to be more than what they are today. had some kids beg me to adopt them, but they were already 18 and didnt even recognize that they were adults and had limitless possibilities. My opinion was they lacked confidence to try. failure is just a new life lesson

Yeah my kids are allowed to question judgement and respect authority simultaneously.... I think it's a shame that their seems to be two modes for the vast majority of people (or what they envision are only two options)
Anarchy (in a negative sense-it has its place in its truest form) or total cow towing to authority. I don't think either approach is correct.

I definitely did stupid shit when I was younger...none of it included being disrespectful to other people-unless it was road rage-I was mainly disrespectful to myself.
I worked hard but didn't always look out for me... 1 part sheep following some very arbitrary societal rules that did me harm and 2/3 bleeding heart trying to hold up everyone else while I was trampled under their feet.

With raising girls you have to hope you can raise them to respect themselves while remaining supportive to others but not to their detriment. Not really a me first attitude but recognizing that they don't have to follow patriarchal bullshit.
