FYI, the Silk Road server WAS hosted offshore. The feds imaged it via MLAT request

They are hidden services on the deep web and not the world wide web that most people frequent

But the identification of the owner had nothing to with the onion address or the webhost. It was due to low tech connecting the dots between an anonymous handle, his promotion of SR and publicly linking those identities to a Gmail account with his name in the address

Was it hosted in the USA? I know the owner was a Texan living in California and busted in New York. But I didn't realize that the web hosting company and its location were identified? Otherwise I would assume it was offshore somewhere

Silk Road was light years beyond this. There was no domain registration - it was an .onion address. Even better than being hosted offshore - where it is easy for Feds to identify the webhost offshore or not - it was *almost * impossible to find out where Silk Road was hosted. No one else could...
