this is why you should register your domains and host your sites off shore.
Silk Road was light years beyond this. There was no domain registration - it was an .onion address. Even better than being hosted offshore - where it is easy for Feds to identify the webhost offshore or not - it was *almost * impossible to find out where Silk Road was hosted. No one else could figure it out. How the feds did so remains a mystery, one that many people eagerly await details...

But the identification of the owner had nothing to with the onion address or the webhost. It was due to low tech connecting the dots between an anonymous handle, his promotion of SR and publicly linking those identities to a Gmail account with his name in the address

There you go, he used a Gmail address, the government gets all of that data, it would have been easy to find him.
That is why I have my own offshore email server, and sorry but the US Feds CANNOT find or touch it, guaranteed!
