i am entering my first figure comp and have a few questions.

when should i apply protan? is there just one coat involved? does it cover natural tan lines from bikinis worn at the beach?

i read that you should never show your inner thigh. is that soley for entering and exiting stage? or should i not pose showing my inner thigh? and why is that?

how does judging work? i attended a prejudging event so i was never able to see how the evening show goes. are you able to see your results to know where you need to improve?

what should i eat the day before the show and the day of?

any feedback would be great!

This depends on how dark you already are. If you have a good dark base tan, you wouldn't need as many coats of protan. Myself I usually use two, but have used three before. I begin on Thursday, because I like to sleep in it overnight to be sure it is even a few times. You want to apply the protan to clean exholiated skin, pour a small amount of the protan into a bowl and use several different sizes of those sponges to apply (purchase a few extra at the craft store or in a paint section). Be sure that you do not totally soak the brush in the protan, it will run like crazy if you do. Also besure to cover your floor as the stuff does splatter no matter how careful you try to be. Apply one coat, sleep in it over night, wear long sleeves and long pants or use dark sheets, shower in the morning, dry off but do not rub or it will come off some. Appply another coat, let set, shower in am if you sleep in it over night. If your not dark enough the morning of the show, you can apply more and not shower before going on stage. Pay close attention to your hands and feet so you don't get it too thick in those areas. The protan tends to cling to those areas really quick. I found it best to use a makeup sponge to apply in this area and on the neck/ears as you can control the amount applied better. Also try not to use it on your face, use a darker loose powder to achieve the color desired for makeup. Jodi..Babsie...did I forget anything here?

Always come out with your outter leg and not your inner. If your doing the proper posing, there shouldn't be much need for the inner leg to be twisted out toward the judges. With the outter portion of your leg, they are looking for you quad sweep, and conditioning of your legs.

They do not actually do the judging at the evening show except to determine the overall winner of the classes. All judging for the height classes is usually complete during the am judging. You can usually ask the judges after the show to give you feedback on the areas that you may need to improve. Copies of the scorecard can be obtained by contacting the event promoter after the show. On the scorecard is just the listing of how each person placed in their one and two piece suits, usually does not have the areas that need to be improved listed, this is best to get right after the show, when your still fresh in the judges minds.

Are you working with someone who is doing you comp. preping? If so, follow exactly what your trainer is saying for you to do. They should have worked with you long enough to know how your body will react to certain things and what will best suit you at that time. I wouldn't deviate too far from what your doing leading up to the week of the show in regards to foods. Some people do a carb delpete and load, others do a sodium load, really depends on how lean you are, if your body holds water like a sponge, etc.
any feedback would be great!
Good Luck! when is your show? And welcome to IM! Just be sure your practicing in your shoes every day and mastering the attitude of I am the one! They are looking for the compete package, face, conditioning, stage pressence, symmetrey! :hello:

Thank you so much for your help! I'm actually doing this with a friend. We don't have a trainer or anyone in particular that is guiding us, just working from as much literature as possible. We are using this first show as an experience and a stepping stone toward hopefully finding something rewarding (in addition to self satisfaction of course) for the hours we spend in the gym.

Good luck to the two of you and always keep the frame of mind that its all about how you feel on the inside!

are the quarter turns precise poses or can we pose with stances that feel more comfortable or that better compliment our figures? at the show i attended, each competitor's pose was a little bit different.

Turns are all over the place. Usually at the competitors meeting the day before the show, they will tell you how they want you to pose. Here in Texas, they want your hands to the sides, not going to the front or rear with very little twist in the waist. I would suggest finding the past shows that are in your area and looking at the pictures of the girls, see how they stand.

I've always cut my workouts out by Wed. Then the day of the show, use the weights in the back to get a slight pump to make you fuller.

thank you again for all of your help! we really appreciate it! i'll try and post some pix after our show.

your welcome and we love to see pics!

JLB001 - You give such good advice. It is nice to have a place to go to get good information and helpful tips. Reading through everything you posted here,m I was able to pick up a couple more things. Your awesome.

Your welcome Gena! How are you hanging in there this week? Butterflies yet?

Gena, I love that gold suit in your gallery...your back is awesome girly!!! Good Luck

Thanks a lot. I wish my legs responded the way my back does. I guess it give me something to work on.

Yes, big time butterflies. I was a reck the 1st time I competed, so I am hoping to go into this one with more confidence. This is a pretty small show, so hopefully I won't panic to bad. Rob has been awesome. I have put that poor gut through hell this past week. He may end up killing me before Saturday. Wouldn't blame him if he did.

Any advice on handeling my nerves?
 :adore:

Hi Gena - I've only competed once so I doubt I can offer much help with the nerves. BUT I have to say...your legs have drastically improved since the first round of pictures Prince posted. You look really good and very ready! :thumb: Congratulations are in order before you even step on stage.

Thanks a lot, that really helps.

How did you do in your comp? Are you going to compete again?

does shaving remove protan? my hair grows super fast. i'll look like a gorilla if i stop shaving thurs before the protan application.

Shaving should not remove the protan. It might keep the hair from growing back as quick for a week or so.

To get the stuff off, I found the best way is to get in the shower, get a dark washcloth, lather it up with a good soap and rub away! (but be gently enough you don't scrub your skin off!) That stuff stays pretty good and is hard to remove.

I competed 10 years ago. :eek!: It was bodybuilding and I won my weight class (but there were only 4 women in it). I didn't win the overall though. The middleweight was way way better and deserved to win.

Sometimes I think I'd really like to compete again...and other times I'm not so sure.

Seriously though - I see major progress in your legs since the first photos. :thumb:

What sort of diet have you been using?

jlb001, i posted a pic of my show. i was so nervous and it really took a toll on my posing. :( i'm planning on doing another show june 19th. i feel so much more confident now so i know i'll do a lot better. the head judge said he really saw a difference on my posing from morning show to the evening.
i love your new pics!
