Yes it really matters. From everything Ive learned, whey is not the best source for a daylong protein. You should take in aproximately 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, and the whey should only supplement what you're taking in all day long. Whey is also a quick absorbing protein, so the OPTIMUM time to use it is post workout when the body needs to feed the most the quickest.
The best all day protein source comes from natural sources complete with the proper amount of carbs to help your body use that protein. Protein powders should be used secondary. Of the powders out there, blends and eggwhite protein are best for in day use and eggwhite is ideal for bedtime if you plan on taking protein then because it is the slowest absorbing. I'll give you my own schedule.
I need 160 grams of protein per day along with 345 grams of carbs. I take ON Pro Complex during the day in one shake to supplement the protein Im getting from chicken, tuna, and lean beef. Immediately after workout I take one shake of EAS Precision Protein. Then at bedtime I take one shake of eggwhite protein because sleep is a catabolic period from what I hear and eggwhite absorbs slow during the night and allows me to wake up more anabolic.
I hope this makes sense and I hope I helped.
