Hey everyone,

I work my abs 3 days a week, once each of my workout days. I workout in the late afternoon, and the abs are last so they get done around 5:00 pm. The thing is, the next morning I wake up completely sore from my workout the day before, except for my abs which feel like they haven't been touched.

Now I know that one of the biggest mistakes for new body builders/lifters is to overwork, or to seek pain when lifting, and I do not intend to make this mistake. But are abs an exception? I do see slight improvements, but I think they could be better improvements. How hard can you work your abs? What excersizes are tehre that stimulate the abs from different angles?

Right now I just do weighted situps and crunches.

Thx.

I would say that experiencing DOMS in the abs is rare compared to other muscles. Don't worry about that.

If you are worried about ab visibility, then you need to drop body fat. You are going to have a hard time hypertrophying them to the point where they are visible at higher body fat levels. Just eat right and try some weighted ab work; maybe you will spark some level of growth.

For a variety of movements I would also consider leg raises and hanging leg raises.

Hey thanks for the reply.

As right now I'm trying to bulk up I don't think I'll be able to drop body fat until I am bigger and start toning (maybe next year?). I am pretty skinny, I weigh about 150lbs and am 5'11". I guess I'll just have to be patient for now, I'll vary my ab workout to incorporate leg lifts.

Is there anyway for me to drop the minimal fat I have around my tummy while bulking? It's the only thing hindering my ab visibility (they're not invisible completely, just not defined either). I'll try to get some pics soon.

This is going to come down to diet. You could try some form of carb cycling. Some people seem to have pretty good success gaining muscle and losing fat like this. However, as you become more advanced in terms of training age, it becomes much harder to do so.

If your trying to bulk...IMO just let your abs go. I am assuming 5'11" at 150 you've had ab definition your whole life...I am 5'11" was 128 a couple of years ago...I'm at 190 now and I do abs during May, June, and July only. I still retain my abs b/c of my diet. Ab workouts aren't going to make them "pop" out. It the lack of fat and water that makes them pop...losing fat is done by diet and some degree of cardio not endless crunches

Ok, so right now I'm trying to bulk up. My goal is 170lbs by May. At this point, should I continue to bulk until about 180/190 before cutting down for definition, or should I try to gain definition then? By definition I am talking about all muscles, not just abs. but first I need those muscles :D
