Anabolic Steroids in Spotlight of Cop-Killer Case

The Seacoastonline.com website, in its ongoing coverage of the Cullen Mutrie cop-killer case, has turned its attention to anabolic steroids. The newspaper explored the role Mutrie???s assumed use of steroids may have played in the shootout that ended the life of Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney and critically injured four police officers working with the New Hampshire Attorney General???s Drug Task Force.
It was widely assumed that Mutrie was using anabolic steroids at the time of the shootout. The New Hampshire Associate Attorney General Jane Young confirmed that police are awaiting the toxicology reports to learn if traces of anabolic steroids were found in Mutrie???s body.
Mutrie was s a ???very large ???juiced??? guy??? and ???very muscular??? according to police; he worked out regularly at Genetix Fitness in Seabrook. Police reports described a man who was 6 feet 3 inches tall and 275 pounds.
Police stumbled across suspected anabolic steroids during a court-authorized search of Mutrie???s house in July 2010. Officer Wayne Young discovered steroids in a coffee table.
???I lifted the top of the coffee table and I immediately noticed a silver scale and a plastic bag which contained several vials,??? wrote Young in an affidavit. ???All the vials were in a liquid form except one which was powder. The labeling on the vials indicated that they were steroids.???
The suspected steroid vials were analyzed by the New Hampshire State Crime Lab. The vials were confirmed to contain trenbolone acetate, nandrolone decanoate (aka Deca Durabolin), boldenone undecylenate (aka Equipoise), stanozolol (aka Winstrol), a Sustanon 250-type testosterone blend and other steroids as well.
Seacoastonline.com asked a professor at the University of New Hampshire if ???roid rage??? may have been a factor that caused Mutrie to shoot at police officers.
John Miller, an associate professor of kinesiology, told the newspaper that he believed the connection between anabolic steroids and the cop-killing shootout was a ???plausible??? theory. However, Miller admitted it was not possible to confirm a direct connection between the two.
Miller appeared misinformed about steroids when he suggested that black market steroids were primarily diverted from legitimate pharmaceutical companies and not underground laboratories.
???It???s not like meth, made in a lab somewhere,??? said Dr. Miller. ???It???s made by a legitimate, reputable pharmaceutical company.???
In fact, a large percentage, if not the majority, of steroids found on the domestic black market in the United States is manufactured by underground labs (UGLs) that import steroid powder from China. It appears that even Mutrie may have manufactured his own steroid supply based on raw steroid powder that was seized from Mutrie???s house.
Given the societal stigma associated with anabolic steroids, it is not surprising that the media has been investigating a causal relationship between Mutries presumed use of steroids and his violent and deadly actions.
