I realize this is probably a shot in the dark, but what the hell?

I'm trying to find out if there's anything out there that could be used to cut ethyl acetate that would dramatically raise it's flash point.

I did a quick search, but all I could find was information on ethyl acetate's properties....then I remembered that I'm a colorist and I wouldn't know shit about it anyway.

Any ideas?
 
Depends on what kind of chemical you're talking about. I'd start with maniclion and kelju, lol.:D
 
You need to talk to biochem. He may be able to help. Granted, he's into the biological end of things, but he may be able to point you in the right direction.

i work in a chemical factory and for years we used ethyl acetate to mop our compounding area, however, the low flash point makes it rather dangerous, so our EHS manager switched it to ethyl malate, and it doesn't clean shit, smells bad enough you want to vomit, and turns the floor into a skating rink.

I proposed the idea of possibly finding a cutting agent for the ethyl acetate and he seems interested, but apparently none of the great minds there have any idea what could be used.

What not to use....:D

Incompatibilities: Contact between ethyl acetate and nitrates, strong oxidizers, strong alkalies, or strong acids may cause fires and explosions. Ethyl acetate reacts vigorously with chlorosulfonic acid, lithium aluminum hydride, 2-chloromethyl furan, oleum, and potassium t-butoxide.

Solubility: Slightly soluble in water; miscible with most organic solvents such as alcohol, ether, and chloroform.

Not much help....looks like H2O is the only option...which I assume would weaken the cleaning characteristics...oh well.:shrug:

I would think all have to do is mix it with another organic solvent with a higher flash point. Ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol for example (diethylene glycol dimethyl ether.... flash point 145.4 F.ethylene glycol dibutyl ether flash point 185 F)

but have I ever done it... no, so don't take my advice without an experienced chemist that can do so in a controlled lab.
 
Have you tried using really cheap bottle of bad wine, maybe even use the boxed wine that stuff is harsh.....

I don't know....I've found a few that we used here at the restaurant. The whole "boxed" thing does have it's advantages, y'know. :nerd:

I say you ditch the ethyl acetate and go with something more corrosive..like Mountain Dew instead.:thumb:
 
Looks like H2O is the front runner. That was Bio's suggestion as well. I also think it will reduce cleaning capability and lengthen drying time so it probably won't work. I'm gonna run it by my EHS manager anyway and see what he says.

I'm also going to bring up the organic solvent idea.

Cheap wine could work... at least until the dirtbags I work with figured out what it was anyway.:)
