DV-981HDDV-981HDDV-981HD1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player (HDMI) Looks good

I bet no one can visibly tell the difference between blu-ray, hd-dvd, and the higher end upconversion players.

Personally, I wouldn't get an Up-converter. Especially if you own a Core duo. A Home-Theatre-PC running FFDshow with post processing (blur nr, upconvert to 1080 etc.), you can watch DVD's at a higher quality than any standalone player.

And plus, warez sites released 25+ HD movies in the last few months, which only a PC can play. So much for AACS protection, the shit got cracked within months..

Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray output 1080p....I'm not sure where you got that information.

It's hard for the eye to discern the difference between 1080i and 1080p at a reasonable distance....it's only when your nose is butt up close to the TV that you can pick it out. 1080p doesn't afford more detail, it takes care of the artifacts and inconsistencies introduced into the picture from interlacing.

:thumb: spot on..!!!!! :thumb:

What was say an old John Wayne movie filmed in? Circa 1950's ... ?

Reason I asked is I watched one on HDNET or one of those channels and the clarity was outstanding. There was no noise like I see in some of the other upconverted ... or what ever they do to it ... stuff I see.

I bet you were watching TNTHD. They show nothing but movies, and most of them look fantastic. I saw an old Paul Newman film from the early 60s, and same thing. Outstanding clarity.

What kind of monitors are you guys using?

Ok.... I'll go first. I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500. It is a 40" LCD 1080P display. Maybe a little smaller then most, but perfect for my smallish room. At this moment, I think the Sony LCDs are the best picture going, especially with a BluRay source.

the first generation toshiba hd-dvd player was 1080i only.

you can't really say either way blu ray is better if you haven't seen a 1080p HD-DVD next to a 1080p Blu Ray. They are indistinguishable.

Even so I know that a native 1080p see will look better than a 1080i signal thats been transformed into 1080p, even though the difference would be not be that big. Why would you want to have a disc thats in 1080i and then was taken up to 1080p when you could just have 1080p with blue-ray. Blue-ray may be a bit more of an initial investment but it is worth it. And you could just buy a PS3 and there you have a gaming system and a blue-ray player.

A little bit off topic, my friend had the trailer for 300 on his PS3 and man it looks like what every action movie tries to be but couldn't. Can't wait to see, hope I'm not dissappointed.

I think the XBR2 is a lot better and seeing as how you could get it for a few hundred more, it'd be a way better investment.

EDIT: The kdl40v2500 is still a great TV though, no doubt. And it's sad that I know exactly what TV you mentioned without even having to google it.

HD-DVD is native 1080p.

That being said, I will probably get a PS3 this year for Blu Ray, as the sales doubled HD-DVD this month. That coupled with strong studio support will likely make it the winner. I'll hold out a while, but looking more & more likely.

Oh. Sorry I was confused for a bit. I did some research though about the new HD DVD players that do 1080p.

At the time I bought it, the XBR2 was $900 more (I got a great deal on the V2500). Not sure why you think the XBR is a 'lot' better. It's the exact same panel. The XBR has the floating glass display (big deal), exchangable bezels (like I need to change colors). It does have the Bravia Pro which upconverts DVDs and VHS (which I don't need) while mine has the standard Bravia processor, and it does have better speakers, but I have a 5.1 surround system. I did my homework :).

These guys agree with me http://www.thegeekbeat.com/home/sony-kdl-40v2500-lcd-television

I thought hd-dvd was going to win because the porn industry back it, and their the reason the vhs won over the betamax

I've heard that about porn deciding the format winner... but personally I think it's a myth.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be much happier if HD-DVD won, as I already have a player that works with my HDTV (via 360) & my computer (and is much cheaper overall). I just have a feeling its just a matter of time before Universal starts releasing movies on Blu Ray. If that happens, it's over for HD-DVD.

This is no different that DVD-R, +R, -RW, +RW :blah: :blah: :blah: ... and there are already multi format drives out there. We just need to chill 'til they are cheaper ... in about six months.

We'll all have an ass-kickin' HD/Blu-Ray dual layer combo unit whizin away in our PC's in under 12 months.

I think they said this due to porn's role in popularizing the VHS over Betamax format. I doubt the porn industry will have that kind of impact on the HD-DVD vs. BluRay battle.

Have you guys heard that the motion picture industry plans to release HD-DVD format on one side of a disc and BluRay format on the other?

Go Blue-Ray.

So in regards to the whole Comcast vs. Direct TV debate, which company puts out a better product? I have Direct TV because of the NFL Sunday Ticket and I just ordered the High-Def programing (not gonna be here until the 20th to set it up). I looked into both companies, pricing and content wise, and it seemed to me that Direct TV was the better deal.

That is a posibility but the first multi format player was announced at CES this year. Meaning it will play both HD-DVD AND Blu-Ray. So this whole format war is going to be less of a war than most think.

That's bad ass. I can't wait until a burner comes out and aXXo starts ripping Blu-Ray movies.

Fletchstrodaumus sees this happening in two years.

Thats what I'm talkin about ... aXXo is the shiznit and when that group starts to release 1080p :rocker:? My frickin cable company is gonna get a raise as I up my bandwidth limit ... but two years? Much less I'm hopin :daydream:

I guess I shoulda said withing two years. I know their is a blue-ray burner coming out on the market sometime soon, not sure exactly when though and from what I remember it was awfully expensive. I can't wait to download 25 gig movies, that ought to take a little while.

Two years is when 3D Tlevisions hit retail store shelves. So trust me, HD and all HD media outlets will be in their prime by then... not to mentionthe Ps3 will finally be good. Ohhhh so much tech, so little time.

Iguess we'll just all have to get a T-1 line at home ...

Blu-Ray and HD-dvd has been cracked already. There are releases all over the net. Only a few in it's pure 1080p though 20+ gig. Most releases are in h.264 which look to me about 90% quality and are only 4.5gigs a movie.

Why do we need disks? I'd be more happy with a little USB Flash Drive Movie that holds 60-80GB's or more...just stick them in little GameBoy game size cartridges.....It would really save space on my DVD Shelves...

FYI, HDMI cables were not made to transfer SD signals, run an extra set of component cables from your sat box as well to make sure SD signals look as best as possible, but when you want to watch something in HD switch back to HDMI. And go for the cheapest HDMI cable you can find. If a salesman tries to sell you monster tell them no and no again when they try to force them on you, and they will. As long as the cable can carry a digital signal its going to work all the same.
Explain this one. HDMI cables were not made to transfer SD signals? Most of us have digital cable. I don't understand how component cables could be better at transferring a digital signal. Not saying you are wrong, just don't understand how that can be.

As far as expensive HDMI cables, SPOT ON brotha!

Already out and can do 50GB

The new $880.00 Panasonic SW-5582 Blu-ray drive is an advanced computer Blu-ray burner that uses brand new Blu-ray writable (BD-R) and Blu-ray re-writeable (BD-RE) 25GB single layer and 50GB double layer Blu-ray discs for storage of data, computer backup, high-definition movies and more.

yea, that's what I was thinking.

I tried it today, component cables look the same to me.

Damn. I just spent the last twenty minutes looking for the website on this. I'll look more tomorrow. Until then I need sleep.
