Training last night, heard a crash and some screaming. Some dude was doing heavy dumbell presses on one of those big balls - somehow managed to break his forearm.

EMTs showed up, took him away... WTF?

My background is more powerlifting than bodybuilding, so I never had much exposure to those balls. They seem to have become popular over the last few years (I was not training due to injury).

Does anyone really use those balls with heavy weights?

It was not due to using a ball but rather a pre-existing condition, bad form, bad luck or more likely combination of all those. Same thing would have likely happened if he was on a bench. I assume the arm snapped while pressing rather than him falling off the ball or something as the cause of the break. Anyways, I broke my humerus (upper arm) spiral fracture clean in half while doing some heavy incline dumbbell bench press three years ago. On my third rep up I heard a loud snap and my arm buckled. At first I thought that all that happened was the dumbbell fell apart or something. It took me a good 10 seconds for the pain to kick in and realize what had happened. I was taken to ER where they did every test in the book rendering me perfectly healthy and the sports ortho surgeon said that although uncommon he sees arm fractures from just the sheer force of heavy lifting.
