Now Playing Secretary Ben Carson refers to slaves as 'other immigrants'

In his first speech as secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson likened slaves forced to come to America to immigrants seeking a better life.
?That?s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity,? Carson told hundreds of federal employees Monday.
?There were other immigrants who came in the bottom of slave ships, who worked even longer, even harder, for less, but they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land,? Carson added.
HUD spokesman Brian Sullivan attempted to clarify Carson?s comments telling CNN, ?Nobody here believes he was equating voluntary immigration with involuntary servitude? - but it seemed the damage was done.
Carson?s comments set off an uproar on social media.
?Pulp Fiction? star Samuel L. Jackson weighed in with a few choice words on Twitter.
?OK!! Ben Carson? I can?t! Immigrants? In the bottom of SLAVE SHIPS??!!?
The NAACP tweeted: ?Immigrants??
This is not the first time Carson has likened something to slavery.
During an interview with NBC in 2015, he compared abortion to slavery.
?During slavery ? and I know that?s one of those words you?re not supposed to say, but I?m saying it ? during slavery, a lot of the slave owners thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to the slave,? he said. ?What if the abolitionists had said, ?I don?t believe in slavery, I think it?s wrong, but you guys do whatever you want to do???
At the Values Voter Summit in 2013, Carson called ObamaCare the worst thing ?since slavery.?
?It is slavery in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government, and it was never about health care,? Carson aid. ?It was about control.?
Calls to HUD for comment were not immediately returned.

I think Ben is saying people need to get over using slavery as an excuse, get off your ass and work

I feel like you cant make this shit up......

lol

DeVos is fantastic at saying super stupid shit too
I dont even care though as long as common core disappears from whatever insane depth it came from- my states education wont suffer

she said no such thing as a free lunch a saying thats been around forever and people lose their minds. well its a fact free lunches at schools get paid for by the state

shes said a lot more than that

fuck her with trying to defund public schools to fund christian schools that historically perform at lower than the national average

the voucher system was used in my state and it was a fucking mess just like its been in every other state its been tried in

know what I say to that though? good

my kids go to some of the best schools in the country- literally
my kids get smarter- everyone else's kids get less education- maybe my kids have a better chance than other peoples kids in the job market
this is a win for me- not for the nation but for me it is

.. the black brothers at my gym are 'hanging their heads' after seeing Big Ben, make his speech.. as if having to deal with the racist trump isn't enough...SAD !!

..Where are trumps FEDERAL INCOME TAXES ?? .. the loyal trumpers... all they do is make one excuse after the other, SAD !!

Any father would be happy to hear these thoughts from the mother of his rugrats..

honestly speaking, I live in an area that is heavily populated with illegals, I'm smack dab in the middle of strawberry fields, and their kids are holding my kids back. these kids get thrown into our schools without the basic foundations of what we teach our kids at home. they dont speak any english and have to struggle to keep up or fall completely behind. they all get free lunch. lunch costs me 2.50 if I pay for it, but if the state pays its $5. the state pays double. its like every cost that the government picks up they get nailed. anyway I happen to think their school is great but they are completely broke and have no money even for chairs, my wife held a fund raiser and we bought a shit ton of chair on my credit card just so other peoples kids have a place to sit while they learn. their school is ranked at 2.0 in the blue ribbon rankings pretty much the worst school in the area. I have to pay extra for everything that I had for free as a kid. just saying. something is wrong with this picture. kids should be at school to learn, not for the free lunch or as free daycare

when the fuck did it become common that parents buy the teachers chalk and paper?

When the government decided defunding education is how to fix education problems.

Our schools held fundraisers recently . Because our town and state don't pay for these things ..

As follows...new playscape at the elementary school...150k (it's two stories and kind of fucking awesome) raised in 8 months.
120k for new fencing and a new plays cape for the prep and k part of the school....it's fenced in to keep the kids in and the bears (and creeps) out. Raised in 10 months

600k. Bullet proof glass and sheet rock lobby..raised in 18 months

Current fundraiser 250k stadium lights for our new track and foot ball arena . 75% to goal..on going.

All pto raised money..but these are mom's with Masters degrees.
Parents pay for sports uniforms gear rental laptop rentals
Lunch is 3 dollars a day. I was paying for 4 kids but now I'm down to three. They have a good salad bar and whole protein sources. They have a juice or milk selection and we have a food allergy section that has a nurse on staff in the elementary school.

Spanish class goes to Spain in high school...economics goes to wall Street on the trading floor. .
Everyone goes to DC...various fees...other trips here and there but not yearly things per se'

Parents have a supply list that they buy for both the class rooms and the kids every year. I usually opt for cases of kleenex and huge containers of goldfish for the elementary school (snacks for kids who forget-or who are broke)
A notice comes home with every event that costs money that says any child that's wants to participate but doesn't have the money may-the pto has scholarships for everything..income isn't a factor.
It takes a village to raise a child.
And know what? 23% of our high school grads in our tiny public school system go to ivy league schools. .usually on scholarships.

This whole community takes education very fucking seriously.

.. I can see not liking my kids being held back because of some kind of 'learning curve' or having to lose time waiting for the illegal kids to catch up...

so can I- its not my experience

my older kids did very poorly in a similar situation but it was a rural white neighborhood. The town's education system was just awful.
recognizing that we narrowed down our housing choice first by school, second priority commute.

we just got lucky finding a house we could afford (barely) and our taxes happen to be very cheap in our town sandwiched between two towns with very high taxes.
we have a much smaller budget because people pitch in what they want to where they want to and it works for us- and we have a strip mall with a couple of anchor stores that pay very high taxes. its a weirdly attractive strip mall because of our towns zoning requirements, lots of trees, flowers, beautiful sidewalks, wrought iron benches, imitation gas lamps etc- and they left up and old barn that used to be in the middle of the property. they have a free family movie night on fridays from memorial day to labor day- you bring a blanket or lawn chairs and snacks
there's tons of family oriented stuff here- and people aren't stuffy- they have fun.

idk- I have a hard time remembering sometimes that the rest of America doesn't look like it does here. The problem I have with feeling bad is- we were blue collar- we worked our way here- we scrap hard. There's a lot of liberals and high education here (masters, phD) but theres also hunting and fishing and plenty of gun ownership (a lot actually)
autism centers, drug treatment centers, every type of specialist you could imagine along with 6 very nice walk in centers all within a 5 mile radius...
we are admittedly low minority population but our minority population has a high amount of middle eastern people that also work very hard and are very educated.

when we lived in a rural area in the same state it just wasn't even close to the same thing- my contempt for white trash from that 20 year experience is rather high.

so the problem I have is- why DOESN'T the rest of america look like that?

Part of the problem; did you know the AVERAGE Boston school teacher makes $93,000? The AVERAGE. I was a union guy for 34 years so I don't begrudge anybody doing well for themselves but seriously?

Our education system is horrific. We need to wipe it out and start over. Vouchers are one approach, charters are another. But the inflated, over administration heavy school districts need to be totally destroyed.

Pain is your friend.

..

honestly 93k a year doesn't sound even remotely outrageous to me for Boston for someone with a masters and required ongoing licensing and education.

looking at our towns BOE contract a little over 75k looks to be the average with upto 56k in tuition reimbursement.
our PE teachers make 110k (roughly) between the different schools - the rates are a little different depending on the grade levels they teach- lots of extra money for various extracurricular

that said- I don't know how Boston school systems perform- given its a city- probably not great.
our town population is under 12k- so the comparison isn't the same

but again- everyone in the community puts forth a LOT towards the schools here.
never short on volunteers or donations....if job growth continues at the pace its at (and I'll credit Trump on his rhetoric for that/along with good weather for construction-as CNN did) I can only see this improving here..pre trump, a major government contractor had announced that they would be hiring 8k engineers over the next three years and had a partnership with our states college for some of those positions...so, yeah..nothing but improvement to come here- no matter who is running shit unless weird mandates occur.

..
I agree with this with where I've seen it which has mainly been in cities
I don't sincerely know what our state level is like....the state school I attend is a pita of bureaucracy

I don't know how involved they are in anything tbh....one school system completely disregarded one of my daughters learning disabilities ..writing her off as unintelligent and a behavioral problem.... current school system said- we'd like to do a lot of testing on our dime and get her up to speed- they included comprehensive IQ testing and shes a tad above normal...absolutely no behavioral issues when shes allowed to control her environment slightly more than the average high schooler- gets good grades in normal classes and is described as pleasant warm and a model student...they also footed the bill for a shrink outside of the school system which she ultimately declined.

what upsets me when I see it is when you hear about a 1st grader who comes to school with no lunch, and has no lunch money and they are denied food or given a cheese sandwich..... one year my then first grader kept losing checks to the school for her lunch- paid a month in advance..my bill got a little over 150 bucks before I noticed and she was never denied lunch (I suck- what can I say)..she stopped buying lunch this year because the salad bar has "wilty baby spinach" according to her.

I know I sound like an advertisement but I really can't comprehend why this isn't everyone's experience with the public school systems ..the good, not the bad.

Would you entrust the education of your child to a minimum wage shithead? Or would you prefer a professional with a teaching degree?

... agreed 100%.. it's also about what facts our kids are being taught, when the school system teaches that evolution is not a fact, or the planet is only 5000 years old on order to agree with some ignorant religious group, or a kid is fucked up because of gender uncertainties ... not good, & don't be expecting trump to support the side of truth... only what makes him seem 'godlike' or as many righties call it 'trump like'....remember trump does not believe in global warming, & his followers don't have the courage to stand up against 'the king in fool's clothing'..... "SAD' ....

Wherein live, teachers are super highly paid shit heads who are mostly illiterate morons with a bachelor's from shit hole colleges who took 70k a year jobs because of the pay. It's almost worth it for a parent to quit working and home school.

Pain is your friend.
