Just how bad are they?

Even the occasional one with a buddy at a bar?

I've never bought a pack in my life and actually got a free pack last week at a bar (what a scam by Camel) that I had one from and then gave to a homeless man who looked like he had found gold...

With that said, if a buddy is a smoker and we're sucking back on some drinks, like that strip club night for instance, I will have the occasional smoke. I started doing this when I got arrested for underage drinking because it allows me to gather my thoughts and assess the moment as opposed to just out-of-control binging like I did in high school.

How unhealthy is this disgusting, yet enjoyable, act?

And yes, I know the health effects of binge drinking.

pretty unhealthy considering what it does to your body, the known carcinogens in a cigarette, and the fact that it is such an addictive product. will one every now and then kill you? probably not. plenty of people smoke a pack a day and live to be 90. then again the rates of emphysema in smokers 30 and 40 years old shows its not something to risk. stay away from it. your lungs are more important than your liver. drink up

It's easier said than done, but that's going to be my goal.

One inescable fact about smoking: you're settings something on fire, sticking it your mouth, and sucking on it.

Every time you light up, you fail an IQ test.

However, some people like to think of it as a public service.

DOMS,

you're saying you've never smoked a cigarette or pot or anything in your life?

Sure, I was young and dumb once. I've smoked pot a few times (finally switching to brownies). I tried cigarettes twice (one regular, one menthol), and spit that shit out. Pot has an okay taste, but commercial cigarettes taste like shit.

smoking the peace pipe gives ManicLion good visions, you Unega Asgaya fear that which Earth provides yet gently place your lips around the puffing death pipes everyday for several hours on your commutes to and from work just to get to your homes and bathe under the false light from a place blowing a man's lifetime of smoke into the air each hour, ha...ha ha ha ha .....ha

smoking tobacco is retarded . . . it doesnt get you high so what's the point?

im forced to give pos reps in this thread

My Mom died of small cell lung cancer 15 years after she quit. Less then 1% who get this cancer are non-smokers, so this very aggressive cancer is almost certainly caused by smoking.

A cigarette now and then probably isn't going to hurt you, but why bother?

I Googled "occasional smoking versus regular smoking"...

A recent European study on occasional smoking published findings that the risk of the major smoking-related cancers was 1.24 times higher for occasional smokers than for those who have never smoked at all. (For a confidence interval of 95%, this data showed an incidence rate ratio of 0.80 to 1.94.)[31] This compares to studies showing that habitual heavy smokers have greater than 50 times the incidence of smoking-related cancers.

I smoked heavily from 9th grade to 1st Year of college. Quit March 2009. It would take a bad sumbitch to hold me down and make me take a drag of one. Make that a group of bad asses. Now my current goal is getting my gf to quit. She is 4 days without, so lets hope she does. Ima be kicking ass in the middle east and she going to be dying of cancer over here. FTL

I was definitely more sexy (I smoked for 17 years, quit 18 years ago) with my stinky breath, nicotine tinged teeth, and fingers. Everyone loves brownish-yellow!

A few cigarettes a month isn't a big deal, IMO. Just be aware for an increase in usage. Gotta nip that shit in the bud!

Why bother with smoking tobacco? It's not like pot or alchohol, which give an alter mental state. People take it up to fit or be cool, and then have to keep smoking just so they don't crash.

Smoking tobacco makes no sense whatsoever.

Why? You think maybe that stripper will find you more attractive?

Oh, me either. I tried smoking a cigarette years ago, that shit was way too harsh on my lungs, I quit after a couple puffs. Currently just the scent of them bothers me a lot. God damn, it used to be OK to smoke in restaurants and planes.

To be honest, the only reason I ever smoke one is for the conversation it brings about.

When I'm sober, I literally have to hold my breath when walking in the same vicinity as a smoker.

I've actually never had a sober cigarette in my life and I can't imagine I ever would.

Nicotine in small doses acts as a stimulant and in larger doses as a relaxant. That's why you'll see a smoker wake up in the morning and take a few quick puffs, but when they get stressed they will take long drags....

It does alter the mind, not as far as marijuana but the shamans didn't include it in their medicine bag just to be cool, well actually they probably did but the cool as in calm that's why it was smoked in the peace pipe. They wouldn't want to give their enemy they are trying to make peace with something like mushrooms that would bring out the inner demons, but rather a mild relaxant so everyone could play it cool while working out the issues.....

I have been doing my own research and the results have been varied, for 2 years I have smoked half a pack a day. A year ago I quit for 2 month's just to make sure I could and then continued. Before I smoked I used to get angry often at minor shit, I used to road rage like the Hulk, punching my steering wheel angry. When I would sit down to write just the phone ringing would send me into a rage, now I can sit here and write 4 pages with my dogs barking and playing around in the room. Of course there are the physical drawbacks, phlegm in your throat, your tongue always feels like you gulped down a pint of scalding hot coffee, when I fly somewhere first thing I want is my motherfucking pacifier.... I'm about through with the experiment, I may just keep some nicotine patches around for really stressful days much easier to get than a bottle of valium....

and what I said earlier about the pacifier gives me an idea...they should start selling cigarettes with a little umbrella like attachment that makes them look like pacifiers in peoples mouths. It folds up nicely in the pack but unfolds when they take it out, if they try to tear it off it ruins the cigarette....that would be enough to make me quit that day they did that...:roflmao:

First off, you're still sucking on a burning stick.

As for helping your remain calm, meditation is better for that. You meditate, you should know this!

Meditation only gets me so far, I'd need to retire to a monastery to calm my current spirit down. It's a wild time for me, I am working on three novels simultaneously, plus my book of poetry, business in the solar industry is off the charts, my 6 dogs keep me going when I get home and I have been doing a lot of my side work for my own computer "guru" biz, fixing and cleaning viruses from PC's, updating websites, etc....

Of course when I quit smoking here shortly I'll start drinking more often....

Just like I could never imagine why people who shoot heroin between their toes, non-smokers can't understand a smoker's desire for a cigarette. It may taste disgusting at first, but you get to a point where there's nothing better.

I still say it's a life-long addiction. I only smoked for about 5 years, was off them for 7 before I had a couple here & there & they tasted just as good as when I quit. I stopped having the occasional smoke though.. I knew damn well I could get hooked again very fast.

And it definitely is relaxing.. I don't know the science behind it, but it definitely relaxed me.

The science behind it helps explain why alcohol and tobacco are the 2 most popular drugs, not because they are legal but because they both can be regulated to act as stimulants or relaxants.....Just as a couple beers might give you a high buzz a buff on a cigarette will do the same, if you want to mellow down then you chug more beers or chain smoke a few cigarettes in a row....

Nicotine appears to enhance concentration[31] and memory due to the increase of acetylcholine. It also appears to enhance alertness due to the increases of acetylcholine and norepinephrine. Arousal is increased by the increase of norepinephrine. Pain is reduced by the increases of acetylcholine and beta-endorphin. Anxiety is reduced by the increase of beta-endorphin. Nicotine also extends the duration of positive effects of dopamine[32] and increases sensitivity in brain reward systems.[33]
