I'm at a loss with what to turn to for a decent carb source in my college cafateria. They used to have oatmeal out (but only for breakfast), so I'd turn to fruit and whole wheat bread for the rest of the day, but it's been a few days since they've had the oatmeal or the whole wheat bread, and I can only eat so much fruit. My alternatives are really refined carb sources - white bread and the fake enriched "wheat" bread, raisin bran, cheerios. What would you recommend?

Fibre one cereal? Raisin Bran would be ok.

Of the cereals, the cheerios would be the best choice - least amount of ingredients or sugar.

The raisin bran is ok if some times you take out some of the raisins - they're covered in sugar.

And you can always go to the grocery store and buy your own whole wheat bread and make your own sandwiches from that and whatever is at the caf. How expensive could a loaf of bread be in a college neighborhood? While you're there, you can get some oats. Again, how expensive could a cylinder of quaker oats (or even cheaper - store brand!) be?

Goals? Stats?

Goals: Build lean muscle - lots of it

Stats: male 6 ft. ~150 lbs
Some lifting experience, but not enough to have made appreciable gains

I am going to ask someone about the oats next time I go to the dining hall. Also, is there anything wrong with getting most of my carbs from fruit (apples?) since the cheerios are kinda high GI, and the breads and pasta are way overprocessed.

If you can get the oats, then good. If not than the raisin bran, IMO, would be your best choice. The cherrios would definately be great too! You are not very big so therefore could benefit a bit from the little bit of sugar on the raisins, besides the bran will slow down the digestion anyway. Don't you have any whole grain bagels or english muffins?

Thanks for the ultra-fast reply, Jodi.
I'd have to buy whole grain bagels or english muffins if I wanted to have them. The only ones the dining hall has set out all the time are your typical enriched flour bagels and english muffins (which I know from reading the packaging).

i am in college too dude i feel your pain. but oats are cheap so is brown rice in a bag!
