The calories in beverages are the same as those in food and therefore should be accounted for the same way.

Well of course..
But what I guess I was trying to say, without saying, was when my buddies and I go out to eat, they usually harp on how diet coke is just as bad because it slows your metabolism like regular soda and has "empty calories.." or something like that.. But they're drinking sweet tea and lemonade with multiple carbs and calories?
I just don't believe I make the wrong decision when I say diet coke vs something else carbonated or not..

The 'slowing of the metabolism' simply isn't true. Additionally, there are no direct negative benefits of drinking artificially sweetened beverages. Therefore, feel free to enjoy the diet drinks.

Regarding "empty calories": There are usually no calories in diet drinks. If you are referring to calories in 'regular' drinks, they are typically called 'empty' because the calories from the sugar (carbohydrates) generally don't provide the satiety that can be achieved from taking in calories via protein and fat. However, like IainDaniel said, everything in moderation. Treat the calories in soda like you would treat the calories that you eat --- if you can afford those 200 calories on a drink, then go for it.

The calories and sugar in 'regular' sweet tea and lemonade are the same calories that are found in food products, and as a result, they have the same actions within the body.

Don't feel guilty about the diet soda. It's certainly not unhealthy and it's an effective way of drinking something sweet without blowing the calories on something that isn't going to fill you up.
