I have a piece of crap 1.3 mega pixel that is close to 2 yrs old and it takes the worst quality pictures you can possibly imagine. I have to upgrade and I was just curious how many mega pixels are enough for decent photos..How many mega pixels are you happy with??..What did you spend on your Digi cam??

Any over 4 megs are for 8x11 pictures
I have a 3.1 and am fine with it, You can get one for realy cheap. I have a kodak

Its brand as well, I've seen excellent pix from 1.3mpixel, Canon I believe.

I have a Kodak 2.1 and its pretty good, works best outdoors though. HP 2.1 was not as happy with, worse indoors, about the same outside.

Nowdays though for $200-$500 you can get a nice camera.

I have one that I got for $179.00 and it's a Sony with 3.2 megapixels. I absolutely love it! :)

For sure..I had a cheap (don't even know the brand) 3.0 megapixel cam that I borrowed off a friend to take pics of my baby guppies and it did not take pics worth crap..everthing indoors was orange and there was no macro setting...in fact my old 1.3 is much better.

The pace that technology is advancing and the way the price of tech goodies is dropping makes me keep putting the purchase of a new cam off..This Christmas for sure..popular name brand definately.

Thanks for the input.

Canon A80 here. 4megapixel

I had a fuji s602 zoom that would record 12 meg pics (in raw super ccd). But I liked my sis' cannon sd110 so much, that I 'just' sold my fuji on ebay to get one. :)

Madden, are looking for printed photos or something to use on the Web?

Nikon Cool Pix 8700. 8 Megapixels. :thumb:

We paid close to $1,000 a few months ago but I've seen them advertised on-line for about half that lately.

Both...and something that will take really good close ups of my aquarium fish.

Here are a few links that might help ...

this is dpreview.com

Good luck:thumb:

this site is awesome. I bought IAB a 5.0 MP canon. That thing ROCKS. It takes the greatest pictures. And we bought an HP photo printer so the prints are great too.

I dig my cannon photo printer ... cheap ink refills and awesome pics. Printer is fast enough for home use too.

3mega pixels is fine i think. I have one but always use 2mp for pic for the web.

You guys have all been very helpful..I will be asking santa (the wife) for a new digi cam for Xmas, so I have now till Xmas to make up my mind. The wife and me share the same hobbies: aquarium/biology (can't get her to touch a dumbell if I tried though) and we have pure Blonde guppies, anyhow we want to selective breed and possibly develope a strain of our own (this is easy with guppies they just go at it like bunnies..females pop out like 50-200 live born fish every 6-8 weeks) and we are in need of a new cam and the only requirement is that it is capable of extreme close ups with "picture perfect detail"

Just a little side note on the aquarium hobby: Discus are the most prized of all freshwater aquarium fish and it is a routine practice of breeders/pet stores to use androgens to make them more colourful and lively..this small investment increases the fishes value..anyway you take your new $$$ Discus home and they lose there color/appetite and become a worthless fish..so if you ever plan on dropping big dollars on Discus ask if they are juiced.

just like a pc get the best you can afford but do not get the latest and greatest.

I have a 5 mega pixel which I believe is the standard right now, so I would say go with at least that, and as Mudge said a quality brand is just as important as the mega pixels.

Damn DG we agree on something. I have the same cam and love the zoom on it. The 256k stick has soooo much space.
LOL...........stick around long enough and it's bound to happen. Is a good camera though. I don't plan on buying a new one any time soon.

Does that have the detachable lens... if so, Nice camera!

Industry standard right now is 3.1

I just got a 4.1 Sony DSC-P41 and it's awesome, very good quality and I got it for $288 CDN

Sometimes also the megapixel count may be a half lie, i.e. software "enhanced" 3.1 actual 2.1 or whatever. I dont know how often that shows up on regular digicams vs digital camcorders, but I've seen it around.

I would definitely surf the review sites, I always do a little research within my price bracket, and likewise I waited awhile before I bought a cam but that was back when 2.1mpixel was $200 ;) For me at the time it was 'good nuff.' It would rock to have a 5 though.

SLR would also be very nice to have as opposed to the fakey viewfinder.
